We have weather

I am freezing today. As opposed to melting the previous two days. Somewhere on the thermometer is something called a happy medium, but we haven’t hit it in a while. I think it’s a fairly wide range of temperatures that would define happy medium, but we’re just determined to bypass those numbers altogether. So it’s cold here today. Just a mere 51° which is about two degrees above winter.
And yesterday? Well, what an exciting day. Tornado watches and warnings. A tornado was spotted seven miles from here and the emergency broadcast service said to go to the basement, it was headed our way. No power for hours. No internet either. I must remember to either get a battery operated or wind-up radio. It’s weird being totally cut off from the world when bad things are going on down the road. No tornadoes came our way, though. And I actually didn’t go the basement either. I stood looking out the windows right next to the basement stairs. The sky was a fascinating mixture of night and green and purple. Then, all of sudden it was daylight again and the birds came out. I think birds are reliable weather predictors.
Over the next two days we’re supposed to get the remnants of tropical storm Barry. We need the rain, but two more days of gloomy weather is a dismal thought. The rain is making my brand new grass grow, though. By the time this streak of rain is past, it should be ready for mowing for the first time.
And my mostly dead redbud tree? It doesn’t look nearly as dead as it did. The bottom half is really putting out a lot of new growth. I think I’ll just leave it where it is. It’s doing a yeoman’s job of trying to catch up with its sibling on the other side of the yard. Maybe I shouldn’t be in a hurry to mess around with its attempts at success.

The lad left for his Dad’s house a while ago. They’ll return him to his job tomorrow afternoon and I’ll pick him up somewhere around midnight, I imagine. It was a late night last night, too. He worked a wedding reception and didn’t get out until 12:30 AM. It’s the third wedding reception that I’ve sat in the parking lot observing. I don’t mind. The really good programs are on NPR late at night and people watching is a lot of fun.
Last night’s crowd was big on cell phones. They stood around the parking lot talking to each other on their cell phones. Honestly, they did. It took a few minutes for me to realize what was going on and then I just cracked up. A couple of people close by my car answered their phones, then scanned the parking lot and located the people who were calling and waved. That was going on all over the parking lot. I also got to watch the bride and groom leave in their car affixed with long trails of tin cans. That made me laugh because they had to drive past a long string of houses to get out of the community and I’m sure that must have gone over realllly well with the residents. That was probably against the rules, but there wasn’t anyone around to enforce them. Just kinda made my day complete, y’know?
