Waiting for the gurgle

Maybe it’s because I’m not as young as I used to be. Back in the day, I bounced back rather quickly from any untoward health events. It was last week that I went to the doc for this danged sinus infection and anticipated that a couple of days on antibiotic would clear it up quickly. Well, no. Each day has seen a modest improvement, but the lingering facial pain was not going away. Until this morning. It changed from pain to mad, crazy itching. At points today I could have easily ripped my face off to get to the itchy part. I called the doc’s office to see if this was a new wrinkle to be concerned about. No, it’s common. Itching seems to be code for “it’s almost all better, really!” My body is doing what it’s supposed to do, the doc said. Fine, but I think it used to be a lot quicker about these things.
And then she intrigued me by saying that I should be on the lookout for the final stage of the healing process. It’ll sound like someone pulled the plug out of the drain and I may just hear a gurgling sound as the sinus drains. Now that might be more information than you want to know, but I find it a fascinating prospect. My face has never gurgled before and I really look forward to hearing it. The human body does the most interesting things sometimes.
