My DSL internet connection hasn’t been anything to brag about over the last couple of days, but yesterday afternoon the juice slowed down to a drip at a time. I clocked it at around 11.8K with the Verizon Speedtest page. And you know, at that point, the only thing to do is shut the computer off. Last night I tried it again and it was so slow the speed didn’t even register. I figured I’d wait until today to see if things had improved before I called Verizon.
My pile of books beckoned and so I dug in to one that the lad gave me for Christmas—The Assassins’ Gate by George Packer. It’s about the Iraq war and events leading up to it. It is fascinating and sometimes irritating, considering the author was rather pro-war and didn’t seem to be too bothered that the reasons for war weren’t honest and accurate as long as we got rid of Saddam. Nevertheless, he’s good writer, researcher, and chronicler. With Christopher Hitchens giving the book a very positive review, I wasn’t too sure what to expect. But it’s quite good so far.
Anyway, this morning I turned the computer back on and wonder of wonders. Not only was my connection speed back, but it was twice as fast as before. The last I knew, I was signed up for 1.5M/second, though my usual speed was somewhere around 900K/sec. Which isn’t too bad, but not nearly as blazing fast as it used to be on Comcast, certainly. This morning, however, I’m clocking 2M/sec. And that is blazing fast compared to what I was getting. Verizon must have done some upgrading yesterday. Way cool. :::happy dance:::
Oh...and just a word about fickle cats. Abbie has decided that her new dog bed is far cozier and much more beckoning than snuggling with Mom at night. Last night, with an apologetic glance, she curled up and sunk down almost out of sight in her new nest. Traitor.
