So I finally decided to download the Linux operating system called Ubuntu. Large 700MB download that my swell DSL let trickle in at a whopping 22KB/sec. Then I checked the hash thingy and burned it to disk as directed. Tried booting it up from disk and it hung about halfway through. Several times.

Ubuntu forums suggested that there seems to be an issue with Radeon vid cards so I should download the Ubuntu alternate for AMD 64 machines. This time it trickled in even more slowly on my swell DSL. Hours later I did the hash check thing and burned it to disk. Checked the disk integrity and all was well.

The moment of truth, as they say. It started up from disk and it gave me three different options for installation, but none that I could see for booting from disk. Well poop. The other disk at least gave me that option...a kind of try it out dealie before you commit to really screwing up your hard drive.

Now I’m seeing all these options for partitioning the hard drive and saving everything first, then possibly having to reinstall Windows because the boot ladder might be messed up if I partition and install Ubuntu.

I’d really like to try this thing out, but I’m about at the point where I don’t think I have the energy or the will left. And that makes me unhappy because I SO WANT those luscious screens and cool stuff as seen in the screen captures.
