Today is a quiet day in the neighborhood. Most of the neighbors are home, so the silence isn’t because of holiday travels away. I’ve not heard one lawn mower or other sound of yard work today.
This is a change from a few years ago when the neighborhood was filled with young families. But the character of the neighborhood has changed over the years and there are far fewer youngsters around. I’m not sure why that would change that weekend yard work habits of people, but it seems to have. There was a time when I’d hear the first lawn mower by 8:00 in the morning on a Sunday.
I don’t think the change is because the neighborhood has grown more conservative or more observant of religious custom. But it is a curious development. I’m reluctant to waste a sunny day, but I’d be equally reluctant to go out and break the silence.
Is this widespread or do people in your neighborhoods mow lawns and weed whack or trim shrubs on a Sunday?
