Pulling the plug

For the last two weeks, the lad has been at school every single evening, until late, and again on weekends. He is involved in preparations for an upcoming drama production. This week is more of the same. Two parental feet are about to be put down firmly.
As one might imagine, homework is hard to do when the student is not at his desk doing it. Going into the home stretch of his junior year is not the time to start letting the grades slip. Especially not after the hard work he’s done the last two and a half years. But his grades have slipped. And by the end of this week, they can’t help but slip more.
The Dad and I have had a few conversations the last couple of days. He tends to get a rosy view of the lad’s world. I fill in the less glamorous details. Tonight we both arrived at the same conclusion. If the drama teacher can’t moderate her demands on the kids, then we simply will have to pull the plug.
The lad and I talked about it last night. I told him that in a couple of years, what his peers and the drama teacher think about him quitting now will be long forgotten. A poor finish in his junior year at high school will effect the college he can into and, quite possibly, his choices into the future. I don’t want to see that happen, especially since he has worked so hard for the last two and a half years. He, of course, doesn’t want to quit.
Even as I write, he is up at the school. Just called, in fact, wanting a ride home. So, I think his conversation with his Dad tonight is going to be a tough one. But both his parents think enough is enough. The next sound you hear will probably be a Mom foot and a Dad foot being firmly planted on the ground. The drama plug is about to be pulled.
And you just know that this isn’t going to go over well at all. I expect a certain tenseness around the homestead for the next several days. Oh joy.
