Winter isn't done yet...
Winter dumped another foot of snow on us last night. I’m being somewhat conservative here. I haven’t actually stuck the yardstick into the snow to measure exactly. I’m sure there’s more than a literal foot, but what’s a couple more inches in the scheme of things? And since the temperature dropped like a rock, I guess I’m going to have to shovel it. The snow is not going to melt any time soon. I think I’ll wait until it stops snowing, however. Just doesn’t want to quit.
Have you ever wondered where the urban squirrels go during a snowstorm? I have. And this morning I discovered one little red squirrel huddled next to my sliding glass door. He had carved out a little cave between the snow and the glass and had his fluffy tail curled around him. I assume he was soaking up a little of the warmth that undoubtedly passes through the glass. When I opened the blinds, he looked at me and I looked at him (with surprise). Suddenly it was as if an electric current blasted through his little body. Kind of like a cartoon. I am sure every hair on his body stood straight out and if he could have spoken it would have come out as EEEEK! And then he was gone, barely leaving footprints behind.
I’ve only recently started seeing red squirrels here. They are a new addition. And very inquisitive. Maybe this was the same one, but several mornings in a row there has been one sitting on top of my woodpile looking in the kitchen window. He stares at me and I stare at him. He seems very curious about what’s happening on the other side of the window. Or perhaps he’s reminding me that there are no peanuts left and he’s hungry. As long as he doesn’t figure out a way to get in, we’ll get along fine.

In case you’ve been vaguely wondering…
Daylight Saving Time begins in six days, on March 8. I, for one, am looking forward to it. Of course, we’ll lose some light in the morning, but we’ll get most of that back by the end of the month. Longer days...give me longer days.
Yeah,or should I say YUK, same here......! Was listening to my favorite radio personality this morning and he was saying how it was not snowing in Boston anymore. Well, not so true for here. Still snowing - doesn’t seem to be accumulating anymore but like you said what is another inch or two at this point. Our deck was actually bare yesterday and the backyard had all grass showing. DAMN!!
Watch out for the red squirrels cause they are the nastiest of the breed (as you probably know), also the most destructive. We have an Albino one that shows up out here now and again...and once had a pure black one....along with the grays and the occasional nasty little red ones.
Word is ‘hot’ - hmmmmmm not here that is for sure.
Yes, if there is a way into the house, the red squirrels will find it and cause all kinds of trouble. They are cute, but I’d rather not have them. I think what this means is...it’s time to get a dog.
I haven’t seen bare ground since, well, at least November. It’s going to be a while. And it’s still snowing out.
Sore, oh so sore. I was out there at 6:30 by my self this morning and then again with two of the kids this afternoon. I bleeping hate snow.
That freaking driveway is going to be repaved so that it can be plowed next year!
And I am so not commenting on the dog thing lol. Sore, so sore.
Oh I wish I could help you shovel, as our winter here has been so mild. I miss getting weather, any weather! I love my squirrels! they are so comical, anymore they don’t run away unless I get closer than 2 feet.
Well, J. I’m in agreement. Fed up with shoveling. And winter. And ice. And etc. Before I even think about shoveling the driveway, I have to shovel a path to the woodpile. That’s the most important. And that was no easy feat. The previous path to the woodpile was sort of like a little channel through a sea of snow. With the extremely warm temps last week, the snow in the little channel melted which *really* made it a channel...of water...with no place to go. So, when the temps went back down, all that water froze solid into a lovely path of smooth thick ice. Slippery as can be and try lugging arms full of wood over that. Such danger and excitement!!
I had to shovel some of the snow off the ice, but tried to keep enough on top to give me some traction. At least that was the plan. Unfortunately, the ice underneath is so darned smooth that the snow on top just slipped around when I walked on it, so trying to shovel was kind of like a death wish made manifest. I am rather sore today, too. With a couple of really impressive purple spots.
Annie, I would be more than happy to share some of this weather with you. We have had entirely too much weather. It seems so selfish to hog it all.
And it still is NOT done...sat on the steps in the sun yesterday and today, reading. Have the headache tonight to prove it and tomorrow......well, 3-6” of snow. What the heck??
And I had my doors open on Saturday. It was so warm and beautiful. Grrrrrrrrr!!!
