Windows

Saturday, 11:59 am

OK, I am in a state of total and absolute frustration....Yeah, yeah, I know, there are BIG issues in this world and in some of my friend’s lives, but right now, right this second I am annoyed with window cleaning.  Does anyone have any tried and true tips?  I have just done the front and back windows in my car for the 88th time in a week and still streaking and filmy (and no one smokes so is not that).  Started doing all the windows in the house, they are easy cause they are the replacement ones.  I finish, they look pretty good, go back and all streaky.  We do not live near the ocean so not that....

I have used windex and every other brand of cleaner, use the vinegar, rubbing alcohol, etc. formula my mom and dad always used, paper towel to wipe with, microfiber cloths that are supposed to be great, newspaper and lord only knows what else.

SO, any tips you have would be SO appreciated.

And yeah, I know this is not exactly a scintillating blog topic, but best I can come up with at the moment!!

I used some cheap vodka once. Can’t remember what I bought it for, but it wasn’t fit to drink. It worked great on windows! Ammonia is the best, though. Mixed with water and a few drops of dish detergent.

Your windows sound like they have that disease that glasses get after a few too many runs through the dishwasher. Look good when wet, streaky and clouded when dry. What have you been cleaning them with, Cyn?? Or is the streaking on the inside of the windows...between the layers of glass? Oh, I hope not. That would be a bad thing.

BTW...what does living near the ocean do to one’s windows?

The only other suggestion would be to try Bon Ami. Safe for windows, but will remove residues that regular glass cleaner won’t. Is Soft Scrub made of the same stuff? I’ve never used that, but have used Bon Ami many times (especially good if you have a lot of fir or pine trees around).

I’m happy to say that I have streak free windows. Streaky windows drive me so nuts, I can’t even describe how nuts.

I assume you’re referring to the inside of the windows?  If so, I would highly suggest the Windshield Wonder which gives you great leverage for that pesky curved glass.  It’s really nothing more than a microfiber cloth on a curved handle, so I don’t use any cleaner, just water and wipe down with another dry cloth.

In case this sounds like an infomercial, it’s not.  I was skeptical, but bought one at Bed Bath & Beyond and simply love it.  I thought the same thing about the PedEgg when it came out, and now I can’t live without it.

Clean with whatever you have on hand, but go over the windows with a DRY cloth afterwards.  Made picture frames for 10 years and cleaned thousands of pieces of glass with every conceivable substance on them.
