We're getting something today

Wednesday, 6:17 am

Good morning. It’s snowing outside. Depending on which forecast I listen to or read, we could face 12” to 20” of snow today or 6” of snow and a lot of ice or some snow, some ice, and a lot of rain. I love the certainty of it. The only thing I can say for sure...we are getting something. The schools are all closed, though. Just in case.

I am prepared for anything. All my batteries are recharged. I have plenty of oil for my oil lamps. My solar powered LED lamp is fully charged and ready to go (I used it every night to read in bed, anyway. Love that thing.). I have wind-up flashlights, a wind-up radio with a weatherband, and also a wind-up gizmo to charge my cell phone and my Kindle. I have enough candles to light a cathedral. There is enough wood in the house to keep me going for days. I have a ton of staples to cook on the wood stove. And I have a French Press coffee maker with plenty of coffee.

That should cover the necessities in case the power goes out. Then again, it might turn out to be a rain storm and I’ll get a flood in the basement. One way or the other, something’s gonna happen today. I’ll let you know. Or if I don’t turn up for days, guess you’ll know the power went out.

Good Morning!  Snowing here, lightly but it is sticking to the trees and such so who knows.  Like you, it could be any (or all) of the above as you described.  You are way better prepared than we are.  I have SOME candles, not sure what my battery supply looks like.  I think we have a couple of those wind up radio thingies, but don’t ask me where they are - attic maybe?  Clearly I have gotten way too far away from my pioneer days, huh?

As of now am planning to go to work...but since I do not have to be there til 10, I have time to make a better decision.  Schools are closed here too I think.  Can you say school in JULY for Massachusetts anyway, this year.

If it gets worse and I stay home, I think I will make drop doughnuts!  Used to be a standard when boys were at home and there was a snow day.  And the word would get out and I would have a houseful of little boys!!  I may not have gotten more candles or batteries or other things to prepare for whatever, but I did remember to pick up yeast!! ;)

Yep, school in July looks like a distinct possibility at this point.

I am so sick of winter, it’s not even remotely funny. It snowed and snowed yesterday. Probably about a foot of it. Then it started raining. And rained and rained. The snow shrunk, but got super heavy. And I shoveled and shoveled. I had to shovel out the woodpile and a path to the woodpile and the deck and the driveway and the front walk. I wanted to get it done before the temps dropped and whole mess froze solid. I shoveled super heavy snow in the pouring rain. But I got it done.

And then, sometime late in the evening.....the snowplow driver made a pass to widen the road. That came to my attention when I remembered that today was trash day and I dragged my little bag of trash to the curb just before I went to bed. I skated right off the front porch and made a bumpy landing on my behind. Everything had already turned to ice. I don’t why the snow plow driver was even out last night. It had stopped snowing hours before. He plugged the end of my driveway full again...with heavy slush. Which froze solid. I’d need a pick axe to dislodge it. I stood at the end of my driveway with my little trash bag in hand, saying bad words. I am so disgusted.

Trash guys never showed up today, either.
