Trash Day

Thursday, 8:04 am

When I woke up this morning, I was a day behind. Thinking it was Wednesday, it came as a jolt to see the garbage truck at the end of the street. Thursday is trash day. I hustled right around and dragged the trash out to the street along with the recycling, too. Me in my jammies cut a dashing figure, I’m sure. I am, indeed, quite happy that the town has instituted new recycling rules called “Single Stream Recycling” - which means that now we can toss all the recycling into the same container without separating everything into distinct piles. I no longer have to break down and tie cardboard boxes, either. This makes the recycling chore a whole lot easier. Especially when I’m making the mad dash to the curb at the very last minute.

Not that I seem to have much of either trash or recycling. I missed the last two recycling collections and only managed to completely fill the container (about the size of a laundry basket) this week. And only one small trash bag to haul to the street today.

This week the town sent along a trash and recyling update sheet along with my shiny new tax bill (increased another $100 this year. Yay.). The new notice announced the Single Stream Recycling plan and also announced that all households in town may only dispose of 5 trash bags per week—the 30 gallon bags. Anything above that will be left behind. The rule will now be strictly enforced.

Because....the town has a new contract with a new a new disposal corporation, which charges a rather hefty fee per ton of trash. As a result, the recycling rules will also be strictly enforced as well. Our town has been rather forgiving about that over the past few years. Many people refuse to recycle (my neighbor being one of them), but now anyone caught putting recyclable material into the trash will be fined $50 for the first offense and $100 for the second offense and so on.

And I do expect that these rules will be rigorously enforced now that the tipping fee per ton of trash has skyrocketed. Our town is feeling the financial pinch along with everyone else.

I am amazed every trash day to see the amount of trash my neighbor has. There is one less person in their family than we have. Tho they do have two dogs but, how much trash could they accumulate ? they eat their own poop for pete’s sake.
I would be happy if our city recycled more than cardboard!
Any word for the Lad yet?

Reading the finer print, apparently we’re also getting those 64 gallon toters for automated recycling collection this spring. Sheesh, it’ll take me a year to fill a 64 gallon barrel. And, I was wrong—if we put out more than 5 bags of trash, we’ll be fined. I guess they mean business.

Well, J, I have one neighbor who is a single woman who puts out more trash each week than the 3 and 4 person families on the street. It simply boggles.

And what word for the Lad would that be? The cooking word or other? He would like to spend an afternoon or two doing some cooking with you. He is learning quickly...made eggplant parmesan this weekend that was exquisite. I don’t usually like it, but this was fabulous. He’s simmering some homemade sauce on the woodstove now...my tongue is hanging down to my shoes. It smells so good. You two will have to talk it over on the phone and make your plans.

I was referring to the ex’s family. Was wondering if he was going to have to go out there or not. If he wasn’t I was hoping to bring my lad over and we could cook up a storm, or two but, the weather gods have there own storm brewing this weekend. So doesn’t look like it will be a good weekend to do so.
Is there some kind of conspiracy going on that I can’t see the lad on winter break going on that I should know about? Yeesh.
I received a few new cookbooks over the holiday’s so I have been trying out a few new recipes with rave reviews the past couple of weeks.
Has he been using his Joy of Cooking book or getting his recipes from someplace else? I have a bunch of cooking websites that are super. But, they are on my computer, sigh.
Maybe next weekend I can bring over my books and we can go through them together, my recipe book is a mess and would scare him lol.
I started (but holiday’s got in the way) taking pictures of things (like on a couple of blogs I read) as I make them to put together a book or two for the kids when they get older. I find pictures along with the recipe appeal to the beginner more. I know when I am making something complicated for the first time it eases my mind a bit lol. Anyway, let me know when is good for the two of you and we will try and put something together. Gotta go get my little one of the school!

I think he will be home for the rest of the vacation, though I wouldn’t be surprised if he spends at least another weekend with his Dad. Or not. Don’t know.

He got a James Beard cookbook for Christmas. Also The Naked Chef. And I have The Joy of Cooking, which he plows through every time he’s home. Now that he has his iPod Touch, he’s downloaded a recipe app which gives him tons of recipes with pictures. So many recipes, not enough vacation. Not to mention the grocery bills lately. Sheesh.

I’ve been trying to not think too much about the storm. It’s too early yet to say how much we’ll get, but I’ll bet it won’t be that much. You’ll probably get more than we do. I don’t wanna shovel any more!
