Still don't know
The lad has called me three times this week. That seems to be the SOP for finals week. He needs moral support because he is exhausted and can’t wait until it’s over. He gets to whine a little bit and I get to make soothing sounds and tell him he can do it. That lasts for a day and a half and then he needs some more. I’m happy to oblige.
This afternoon is his last final for the semester and then his thoughts will turn to...."When the heck can I come home?” Good question. It hasn’t come up much in conversation this week. He doesn’t have room in his brain to think about it yet. By 5 PM this afternoon, I suspect the phone wires will be burning up.
But we still don’t know what to do with him. The weather is not cooperating particularly well. We have a small window of opportunity between now and the start of the next storm tomorrow night, which, depending on who’s forecasting, may deliver up with a foot or more of snow or rain or sleet and freezing rain. At least, along the coast. Interior areas are going to be a whole lot worse.
So, I suppose much will depend on how desperate he sounds tonight and how that plays on my heart strings. Renting a larger vehicle is not out of the question, by any means. I’d really rather not, actually, but, as I say, it depends. I am a soft touch when it comes to this kid. But we knew that.
Throw caution and environmental principles to the winds (snows?): rent a Hummer.
Now, that made me laugh right out loud.
Sheeeeeet, I had a important Dr’s appointment yesterday and I have to work today. Dang. I would have loved to go get him with you! And, and he could have brought his whole dang dorm room home with him in the suburban!
I had to drive home from work Thursday night in that storm. It took me over a hour to get home. It was awful and I was a wreck by the time I got here! I did bail out a hour and a half early. Which was great timing. I squeezed in between the 2-3 pm panic rush and the 5-6 commuter rush. It would have taken several hours to get here if I hadn’t! They would have been peeling me off the side of the road and wrapping me in a little white safety jacket and throwing me in a little round padded room if I had to say on that freeway any longer than that lol. L
Let me know when and what you decided to do about the lad. I do have Monday off work. Well Sunday too but, I don’t think sunday will be a good driving day!
My Dr’s visit could be a good fourteen hour road trip conversation lol.
Kate, could he get an esaver and fly home (or does he have to bring a lot of stuff with him?). If he can do that, it would probably cost about the same as renting something plus gas? And if he could come in through Manchester, it would be even better for you??? I think you have until midnight tonight (according to the latest) to get him in or sometime after midnight tomorrow night (Sunday)?? Just a thought.
J, if you’re seriously in the mood for a road trip, I may enthusiastically take you up on the offer for Monday. I’m not going anywhere today. The forecast and the timing are too iffy. Snow is one thing, but ice and freezing rain aren’t anything I want to mess with. The lad has a lot of stuff to haul home and your car would be perfect for the job.
Cyn, I’d like it if he could take the train or a flight, but he’s miles and miles away from the nearest train station or airport. And with the amount of stuff that he has to clear out (or pay to put into storage), it’s more practical to just go fetch him.
Of course, having the world’s smallest car makes it an extra challenge. If it wasn’t for all his stuff, I probably would have taken off around 4 AM and would have had no trouble beating the storm. But the car rental place doesn’t open until 9AM on Saturday and I wouldn’t have been on the road until 10 or 11. That would be cutting it way too close.
