Snow gremlins
I’m truly beginning to believe that there is something to my theory that every time the lad leaves home the snow gremlins cackle and rub their little hands together in glee.
Sometime Friday afternoon, I looked at the weather forecast and it said we were going to get a whomping good rain storm late this weekend. Nothing to get excited about, certainly. On Friday evening the lad departed for his Dad’s house for the weekend. I should have heard the snow gears clanking as soon as he left the driveway.
Last night my weather friend called and once again asked, “Have you looked at the weather forecast?” Her voice was filled with angst, horror, dismay.
“Not since Friday afternoon,” I said. “The last time I looked it said inches of rain. Why?”
“We’re supposed to get a foot of snow,” she said. “Starting late Sunday night and going all through Monday morning into the afternoon. White out conditions and strong wind. It’s a nor’easter.”
Well, what do you know. I should probably refrain from cackling back at the snow gremlins until the lad is securely back in the house. He is due to roll in the driveway early this evening. Just in time to warm up that snow shovel. I guess our January thaw is over.
I do not envy the poor souls who will have to navigate rush hour in blinding snow tomorrow morning. It sounds like it’ll be a hair-raising ride. My friend said she’s probably not the only person who is ready to pack a cot in the car and move into the office for the rest of the winter. Driving to work in raging snow storms wears thin really fast. In fact, it wore thin about four storms ago.
#$$%%#%&*# enough already! Well, at least I don’t have to worry about driving to work in it.
We’re probably still just getting warmed up for the really big finale in April. It’s already been a very long winter and there’s 4 months to go yet. I know I’ve had enough already.
worked in the city all weekend and it was gorgeous in there. Had the windows wide open both days in the office and everyone was saying how neat it was to hear the sounds of the city and feel a really mild breeze. So yeah, the snow gremlins were having their fun!! I just happened to look up at the tv and the school closings are scrolling across the screen. HELLO?? The storm has not even started and schools are closed from south of the city up past you. So, that could be a good sign cause it seems whenever they jump the gun, it turns into nothing!! I hope, hope, hope. Like you, I feel as though this winter has gone on way too long already.........of course this wonderfully mild week has not helped!! Fingers crossed.
I would neither be surprised by a larger than predicted storm nor a complete fizzle. Schools are closed, our snow emergency lights are flashing around town, and the grocery store was picked clean this evening. There were like three containers of milk left by the time I got there. People aren’t taking any chances, that’s for sure. Since the lad came home a couple of hours ago, I’m leaning toward the complete fizzle end of things. He has yet to shovel snow this vacation. I swear he’s charmed. Well, we can hope that trend holds.
It was a beautiful week here, too. I had the back door open two days in a row. It was warmer outside than inside. And the air smelled so good. Like spring! Just enough to make the rest of winter pure torture.
I received a recorded phone message last night at 10:30 informing us that school is closed for today. Woke me out of a dead sleep. And of course the kids wanted to know who was calling that late on a Sunday. So you know how the rest of my night went with two excited children that Knowing that they have NO school in the morning.
We have a few inches already this morning. I see that the have gone from us getting 13-16 in. to 10-12 this morning.
By early last evening even Amesbury had closed their schools. They’re usually one of last last last hold outs. They announced before we did. I was utterly shocked! Good thing they did. Holy moly, it’s snowing so hard that I can hardly see the houses across the street. The lad has been out to shovel once already. He was nervous because he had a doctor’s appointment this afternoon at 1PM and wanted to keep on top of the snow. Now he’s all tucked up in his bed, watching a movie, enjoying knowing he doesn’t have to shovel until it’s over. His doctor’s office closed today, too.
I think we have 6 or 7 inches right now. If it keeps snowing this way, we’ll have no trouble reaching 10 inches. I’d bet on a good solid foot before it’s over. Plus drifts, of course. The wind is pretty strong this morning. I haven’t seen it snow this hard in a long time. But it’s a fast moving storm so it should be out of here by early afternoon. Be thankful for small mercies, I guess. If this was one of those lingering storms, we’d have snow up to our armpits.
About 8” so far - and no signs of letting up yet.........my mom has a doctor appointment in Lexington with a specialist at noon. I suspect we will not be going!! I have no problem taking her if it lets up, but I would have to hogtie her and blindfold her to get her into the car to go. LOL She has this irrational fear of driving (with me??) in snow. I don’t get it. HA!! I heard a nasty rumor there is another one coming our way later this week. ENOUGH!!
The current consensus seems to be that this next storm will be all rain. Of course, that’s what they said a few days before this storm. So, who knows. The trouble with rain, though, is that it’ll get cold and we’ll have mountains of ice again. If I had the luxury of choosing… shhhh. The snow gremlins don’t need encouragement.
Did you get your Mom into the car? It’s easier when you’re doing the driving. Being the passenger is a whole different reality.
