Cider Press Hill

My new best friend

Tuesday, 6:09 pm

Despite telling myself that I wasn’t going to buy one more thing this month, for any reason whatsoever, I went and bought one more thing today. Shame on me. I’m not suffering from any ill effects, though, let me tell you. I can’t wait until my new small ‘appliance’ arrives.

After shopping around and comparing various models, and putting it off, thinking about it, and doing some more comparison shopping, and putting it off some more, I happened to look at my floors this afternoon. About three hours after having dragged the vacuum cleaner out—and a half an hour after carrying a couple of arm loads of wood to the rack by the stove. Wood crumbs all over the place.

Now, I love my wood stove. But the wood crumbs...not so much. And I’m tired of dragging the vacuum cleaner out of the closet and fighting with the cord and the hose and the fittings two or three times a day. Besides...it eats electricity like nobody’s business. I knew there had to be a better way.

So, my new Oreck Restaurateur (completely manual) Floor Sweeper should be on its way to me within the next day or so. I’m told that it will eat the wood crumbs like candy. And sand, too. And whatever else it can find to eat. Except electricity, of course. It’ll be small enough to tuck in a corner somewhere so that I can grab it with ease, too. No cords. No tangled hoses. No more wood crumbs. I am so excited!

I’ve wanted to buy one of those “small appliances” too.  It looks as if you’ve done all the research.

I’d love to hear how it works.

I am very hopeful, Cassie. The Oreck also has a 30 day trial period and a 10 year warranty, which seems to suggest a high degree of confidence on Oreck’s part. I have yet to find a single negative review or negative customer comment. I would surely not like to be the first. ;) It should be here by the weekend and I intend to give it a good workout, so I’ll let you know.

Many years ago, I had a floor sweeper with a brush on it instead of the rubber blades. It was fantastic for cat and dog hair and small particles, but had trouble with anything larger. This one is supposed to be magnitudes better on all counts. And restaurants really do use it.

My husband is one of those people who could easily get hooked on those “as seen on tv” products.  Last thing he suckered me into buying was a battery operated (rechargeable battery) sweeper thingy.  Turns out it is only good on carpets, and of course I have ONE carpet in the house--everything else is hardwood.  Yours sounds to be much more practical!!

OK, speaking of small appliances...maybe we should all just invest in shovels.  Don’t know about you, but we are about 6” into our latest snowstorm (11AM on 12/20) and does not look like it is letting up anytime soon.  I am at work, hoping my boss will say GO HOME.  It is insane.  A horrible drive to work this morning and I live close to here.  The roads have not been touched, no sand, no salt, no plows.  YUK ENOUGH ALREADY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, it’s snowing here, too. This was the weak storm system that wasn’t going to amount to anything and wasn’t going to cause anyone any trouble. Ha. It gave the snow plow driver the opportunity to plug my driveway full of snow again. Yay me.

I stuck a ruler in the snow on my sidewalk and it said 7 inches. At least it’s light, fluffy snow this time. The weather forecasters are now trying to tell us that we’re going to get a rain storm this weekend. No snow. I don’t believe them. I shouldn’t say that, though. If we do get a deluge of rain, it’ll probably end up cascading into my basement because there’s no place else for it to go. I can’t wait.

I also have a rechargeable sweeper. It’s not really a sweeper though. It’s a Swiffer thingy that sucks up dust and such while the attached cloth captures the rest. It works very well as far as it goes and I use washable microfiber cloths on it, which, I think, work better than the Swiffer products. It’s great for non-carpet. But I have a lot of carpet. I wish my new floor sweeper would hurry up and get here!
