Mute button

Wednesday, 5:37 pm

I turned the television on to catch the early news and weather. Immediately an ad came on for a local Republican teabaggy candidate. About all this Republican says is “I’m going to cut taxes. I’m in favor of cutting taxes.” I wonder if he would enjoy living in his perfect free market, totally tax-free, privatized society. I have a feeling not. By the time he and his cronies had finished privatizing everything and paid the fees for every big and little service and road use that they currently take for granted, they’d probably look back fondly on the whole idea of taxation and somehow the whole mess would be the Democrats’ fault.

But anyway. The ads are on in full force and I refuse to listen to or watch them. They are like fingernails down a blackboard. Every time one comes on I hit the mute button. Their ad money is wasted on me. Guess that’s a good thing.

Lord, it has been ages since I read anything here or posted anything...am at work, so cannot log in to do any posting. And besides which, I suppose I shouldn’t!! ;)

Elections over, dust is beginning to settle or should I say tea leaves.........but I do agree with you, I shut those ads off, I click off the phone the second the robocall comes in; if it is a real person, I say sorry, but I have made my decision. Thank you and goodbye.  So there dollars are wasted on me as well.  I throw out the snail mail unopened and unread.

I really wanted to comment on your post before this one regarding your son.  But comments are closed on that one.  I really have been out of touch.  Not sure exactly why, a lot of stuff - nothing very interesting and definitely not fun - going on I guess.  Anyway, first of all, how did 23 happen?  I remember 16 for him I think.  Geesh.  ANd secondly, good on you for bringing up such an obviously talented and admirable man!!  ANd thirdly and definitely not the least important, best wishes and congratulations to him.  What fun and what an exciting road he is starting out on.  That is totally awesome.

ANd now, back to work!!

Somewhere between the time you commented and now, the time ran out and commenting shut down on this post, too. I tweaked the settings a bit.

Well, I have a strong opinion about robocalls now, let me just tell you. On the morning of election day, Comcast phone service on the other side of the street went down and on my side of the street Comcast internet bit the dust. Neither came back until shortly after the polls closed. My internet moved glacially when it came back on and did not completely recover until the next day. Turns out the extremely high volume of robocalls on Comcast’s network took it down. In northeastern MA and Southeastern NH. Comcast apologized profusely and said they’d investigate..

I hope they were all Republican calls.

I don’t know how 23 happened. The lad surely is enjoying it, though. He has his own place now by Coney Island with a great landlady who shares her two mutts.  I think his apt is almost as large as my house. He lucked into it with furniture, utilities, washer & dryer (off the kitchen), and cable/internet included. And, so far, no signs of six or eight legged wildlife.

In any case, he loves his work and he’s learning a huge amount. Just missed the last standing room only spot for the launch of the UN Fund for Victims of Trafficking last week. Nicholas Kristof was there along with Demi Moore and her other half. The lad was disappointed about that. But, still meeting interesting people and getting some good solid writing experience. He’s doing a lot of research and writing on women’s human rights in emerging economies and the not so emerging ones. Totally envious.

I think the very best instruction is writing 800 words and having to pare them down to 600-700 words. Best way in the world to learn how to write a good tight article where every last word earns its space. The next most important skill is learning how to get an interview before the phone slams in your ear. Tricky, that one.
