Kindness
This morning, my next door neighbor arrived with his van load of young people. They piled out with their shovels and began attacking my driveway. I had managed to shovel the very barest minimum required to get my car out, but not an inch more. It looked like a pretty feeble attempt, I must admit. With six kids shoveling, it took all of five minutes for them to widen my driveway to nearly normal. And what’s more, they seemed to be having an awful lot of fun doing it. After they were finished, they moved on to my neighbor’s house and spent a half hour sledding down his hill. More laughter and fun. I let them know just how much I appreciated their work and it really seemed to touch them.
I still don’t know what the situation is involving these kids, but from where I stood, they looked like an awfully nice bunch who were oddly affected by someone telling them they were wonderful and tremendously appreciated. I wanted to hug each and every one of them.
And I noted that my neighbor stood back watching the interaction, just beaming. Whatever the situation is, he obviously cares about them a great deal.
They will, no doubt, feel good about it in years to come. I remember one late January night - 1962 I believe it was, when I and two equally inebriated friends went from driveway to driveway shoveling one after another while people slept.
Nothing but a drunken stunt with no purpose, but sometimes when I need something to feel better about my miserable self, I remember how a dozen people must have felt the next morning.
Thanks for reminding me that snow still exists. Now I don’t feel so bad that it was only 68 today.
Perhaps they will remember in years to come. I know I will. That kind of unexpected kindness tends to stick with you.
Your story made me smile. That does not seem like a typical sort of inebriated activity, you know? I’ll bet the happy ‘victims’ have since wished it would happen again. What a lovely treat to wake up to!
I wouldn’t mind a 68 degree day. So looking forward to one. Want to trade for a while?
The downside is that you’re obviously now considered a little old lady who needs assistance from younger stronger folks.

LOL! If that’s what it takes to get my driveway shoveled for me...here...let me stoop and totter a little bit for ya.
Heck, even I would stoop and totter, a lot, if it would get someone to shovel for me!
