Babies

Saturday, 10:12 pm

As promised, here are a couple of photographs of the bird-nest-in-a-wreath from my front porch. The last I mentioned, there were 4 tiny eggs in the nest.  A couple of days later there were 5 eggs in the nest. Now, there are 5 tiny baby birds in the nest. They have all successfully hatched. Mother and father birds are taking good care of their babies.

As you can see, baby birds are not exactly the picture of cuteness. They, in fact, seem to be an undifferentiated mess of fluff and chicken skin. But really, there are 5 baby birds in this nest....this nest that is small enough to fit in the palm of my hand. These babies are tiny! And they are so helpless and dependent on their mother. I felt a little guilty for chasing their mother away to take these photos. They sensed my presence and the one showing the yellow beak was ready to be fed. That one is going to be the first one to fledge, I’ll bet. As soon as I’d taken the photo and gone back in the house, the mother came back. Everyone is doing well.

Just a word about Pepto Bismol, an ad for which I just saw on the teevee....

NOW.....NOW they come out with CHERRY flavored Peptol Bismol??? After making me suffer for an entire lifetime with WINTERGREEN flavored Pepto Bismol? I have hated the flavor of Wintergtreen since I was a kid. And whenever I see that horrible shade of pink I not only think of Pepto Bismol, I can TASTE Wintergreen. It would have all turned out so differently if Pepto Bismol had been Cherry flavored. I swear, it would have.

Awwwwww, how cute! Won’t be long before they are poking there heads out and chirping away.

And yes, as far as I know, we are moving. Probably sometime in July. But anything can happen between now and then! A lot can happen in two months!!

You know, it’s interesting that while baby mammals are almost uniformly cute to humans (at least after the first few days or so), baby birds are pretty much uniformly unattractive (except perhaps for domestic fowl).  There’s got to be a good evolutionary reason there.

P.S. Cherry-flavored Pepto Bismol has been around for a long time.

Speaking of babies, (belated) Happy Mother’s Day.  I’m sure The Lad was his usual attentive self.

Hi stranger.............it seems like forever since I was here but I guess same goes for you!!  lol Terrific pictures.  I thought of you the other day, walked outside and a bird flew out of my overhead light on my steps.  I checked but so far no nest there.  I will keep an eye on it though cause they have done so before.

Are we ever going to have a real spring, lots of sun lately but cold!!  And windy!!  J, where are you going?  Please don’t say you aren’t going to have to put up with winters anymore....please don’t say that!! ;)

No Cyn, no winters. We are moving to Florida. Not my first choice but its job related. It will take some adjusting I am sure. But, but, I will at least have palm trees again!
Now, if I could get Kate to go it would be almost perfect!

Well, no reason (except for a few birds, a cat and potentially a new dog), she cannot spend some substantial time with you in FLorida.

Lucky you, it would not be my first choice either, but it sure will beat being here from November to May--good luck to you and yours.  I would love to be moving!! Just waking up every morning and seeing palm trees is like therapy.........great therapy.

Ok? what happened? You said that you would come out of hiding!

People, this is a public announcement. Kate is fine. Not ill at all. She is just simply neglecting her blog, and blog friends. He he he, that ought to get her to come out. Gotta love good old fashion guilt!

Look Kate! not a word about the baby birds.
I thought of another nick name to call you (well two. but one would give your next post away lol. So I will tell you it later)
The Slammer.

I dunno, your guilt trip does not seem to be working......you sure she is OK?  Hasn’t moved?  Left town with no forwarding address?  Huh?  Huh??  Kate, come back, you are missed!!

Posted by cyn on 05/19  at  09:32 PM

Well, I know she is fine. I talk to her on the phone. Just busy doing other stuff. She will come out sooner or later lol.
