When I signed in to my bank account this morning, little lights flashed and sirens wailed (well, not really) concerning a new scam that has the FDIC all annoyed and looking for hides to nail to the wall. You know, I don’t think it’s a healthy idea to go messing with the FDIC, but whatever.

This was the notice in my bank account mailbox:

FDIC Consumer Call Centers have begun receiving a large number of complaints by consumers who received an e-mail that has the appearance of being sent from the FDIC. The e-mail informs the recipient that the Department of Homeland Security Director has advised the FDIC to suspend all deposit insurance on the recipients bank account due to suspected violations of the USA PATRIOT Act. The e-mail indicates that deposit insurance will be suspended until personal identity, including bank account information, can be verified.

Consumers should not access the link and should not under any circumstance provide any personal information through this medium.

The FDIC is attempting to identify the source of the e-mails and disrupt the transmission. Consumers are asked to report any similar attempts to obtain this information to the FDIC by sending information to alert@fdic.gov
.
Information related to federal deposit insurance or consumer issues should be submitted to the FDIC using an online form that can be accessed at:

Not that any of us would take that kind of scam email seriously or click on a link. Some people do, though.
