Oil imports

This comes under the heading of I didn’t know and I should have…
Reading Corrente this morning, I read that Canada is the leading exporter of crude oil to the US. One of the commenters was a bit surprised or, maybe, doubtful. I thought I’d read that someplace a while ago, but certainly wasn’t about to claim it as fact. So I looked the information up and....
According to the most recent figures I could find, from the Energy Information Administration (US gov’t), as of April 2005, Canada exported a total of 1.551 million barrels of oil per day, closely followed by Mexico who exported 1.510 million barrels a day. Saudi Arabia came in third with 1.4 million barrels a day, with Venezuela coming in fourth at 1.391 million barrels a day.
Numbers 5 - 15, respectively, are: Nigeria, Iraq (.5 million/day), Russia, Angola, United Kingdom, Ecuador, Algeria, Colombia, Kuwait, Norway, and Trinidad and Tobago.
If we look at Petroleum Imports (which I assume includes refined petroleum products as well as crude oil), then the top four countries who export to us are Canada, Mexico, Venezuela, and Saudi Arabia.
I thought that was interesting. For what it’s worth. Perhaps it would be in our best interests to be nicer to Canada and Venezuela, dontcha think? Trying to off the Venezuelan president and overthrow his government is probably a lousy way to maintain cordial trade relations. Especially now that China is so oil hungry and is making sweet deals all over the place.
