Normal Saturday, normal concerns

The lad is off at work, the laundry is hanging out in the sunshine and crisp (non-humid) air, the pansies are pretty, and the grass needs mowing. In all...pretty much a normal Saturday.
I’m dragging my feet on the lawn mowing end of things. The lawnmower is electric, fer goodness sake. I love it, I really do, but boy does it make my electric meter dial spin like mad. This week, I really have to take my reel mower in to have the blades sharpened. Really, really.
And...on the topic of grass. Remember that large patch of lawn out in the front side yard that I reseeded this year and where I dumped obscene amounts of water? Yeah well.
The grass seeds sprouted and looked pretty nice for about two weeks. Then the crab grass started growing. And then we had clear sunny days and the sand baked. And baked. And baked. We’ve had a few thunderstorms and even a couple of days of steady rain. But that’s all undone by a day or two of bright sunshine. I noticed yesterday that much of the new grass was brown and crispy. Not the crabgrass though, naturally. That’s green and hearty and growing well.
Well, I’m not of a mind to dump water on that poor grass every sunny day we have. The sand is simply inhospitable to grass. There is no sense in trying unless I order truck load of top soil. I’m not rushing to place the order.
On the other hand, if I decide to forgo the topsoil and turn the area into a mulched garden, I’ll have weeds and grass sprouting up through it faster than I can blink.
So, on a scale of 1-10, this area of the yard rates an 11 in the pain in the rear category. What a luxury it would be to have real dirt.
