Cider Press Hill

Mud slide?

In the last day a lot of rain has moved through the state. Most of it passed us by and clobbered the south shore. Now the remnants of Ophelia are starting to move in and, once again, we’re threatened with torrential (and prolonged) rains. I’ve been keeping a close eye on the hill behind the house to see if the tons of new soil, that the guy up there had hauled in to extend his yard out over the edge of the hill, is going to stay put. We had a brief torrent earlier today and there was a bit of soil slippage. At least he had the contractors move the heavy caterpillar machine away from the edge at quittin’ time today. With luck, I won’t wake up tomorrow morning to find a ton of new soil washed up against my fence...or a flood in the basement.

Oh yeah, there was some good news today. The replacement windows for the front of the house are going to be about $600 less expensive than I’d estimated. That’s the kind of news I like! Still not sure when the project is going to get under motion, but it should be within the next two to three weeks.

Good with the bad (or potential bad anyway)? I come to your blog to take part in a bit of shared humanity. Odd as it sounds, I feel a sort of kinship toward you and feel a bit of pain when you are blue. And a bit of elation when you are happy. Hope that’s not weird.

No, that’s not weird, Pablo. That’s called being friends. smile

Fortunately for us, Ophelia is heading out a little more to sea so we’re escaping most of the effects. Very little rain here so far. That’s an occasion for a happy dance! Perhaps luck will hold until all that dirt up on the hill has a chance to grow some grass to help keep it anchored.

OY, I am keeping my fingers crossed that the hill stays in place today. So far today there hasn’t been too much rain fall.
So are you changing the look of the windows? Are you going to keep the big window flat?

Same size and all (big window still flat), just with the muntins inside the glass instead of between 36 different panes. Easy cleaning. And no more storm windows!!!! YAY!!!!

Well, at least on the front of the house. Back of the house next year, maybe.

We have four storms SE of us, two on a NW route.  Jova is the first.

Not what one wants to see.

Isn’t that an uncommon amount of tropical activity all at once? It looks as though Jova *may* turn northward and fizzle out over colder water. Keeping fingers crossed.

Yeah, it’s unusual to have them in a row within days of one another.  I spent most of the day gathering all my hurricane in-house survival stuff and putting it all in one place.  Tomorrow the go-kit.  Fortunately all the important papers are in a safe-deposit box (unless the credit union goes).

I don’t envy you that that kind of preparation and the thinking that must go along with it. Will keep hoping all of them go off into colder waters and leave Hawaii safe.
