Brings back memories. One of the very few things I miss, living down here in the jungle, is the smell of wood smoke and spending weekends splitting and stacking logs.
Now my fireplace is gas and it lights when you push a button and I only use it on Christmas eve, but then New Year’s on the beach or in the boat sort of makes up for it.
Capt Fogg--I would guess that more than makes up for it!!
Gee Kate, nothing like raining on my parade...here I am (back in MA by the way--yuk!) trying to wrap my mind around Labor Day being right around the corner and you go and talk about firewood for the winter........or much, much sooner if the temps keep going down. Geesh......... My house was so cold when we got back here yesterday and damp, gross.
Yes, wood is expensive in New England, Pablo. I noticed in the newspaper want ads this week that $320-$345 is the going rate for a cord in my area this year. Nevertheless, it’s still much less expensive for me to heat with wood than with gas. And I like wood heat a whole lot more, too. Wouldn’t mind having my own half acre or two of woodlot, though. ;)
Capt. Fogg, a warm sunny beach or a boat on New Years Day sounds really fine to me! A lot better than shoveling snow.
Welcome back, Cyn. The weather has improved since your return! The humidity has dropped and the sun has come out. YAY! At least for a day or two.
I read a long range forecast yesterday...they’re calling for a very cold and snowy winter. Doesn’t that just thrill you to bits???
well you did ask me to bring back gorgeous weather........I did my best!! 3.5 weeks in Oahu with a side trip to Maui and only ONE HALF DAY of rain and that was “on the road back from Hana” on Maui, which is a rainforest area!! Otherwise, when it rained, it was only around 4AM and was done by 6AM. Perfect!!
As for this winter I have heard the same, didn’t we have one like that last year? Enough already........I am much less than thrilled. Our plowing bills last year were the highest we have ever paid, I think what we normally spend in 3 years is what it cost us last year. And, of course those bills will go up again this year, too. It just never ends....
Since the sun just finally broke through here, I am out to the deck to enjoy it!!
We had some serious rain in the night, but it was all gone by daybreak. Now it’s sunny and the humidity is down around 46%. Just lovely. Thank you for bringing nice weather back with you!!
With regard to snow...a little bit of it is nice in the winter, but we went way overboard last year. If we have to have lots of snow, I’d really appreciate it if the weather powers that be would arrange to have it cold enough during the snow storms so that it doesn’t turn to rain toward the tail end and then freeze solid. Ice was my major gripe last year. We didn’t have inches of ice, we had feet of ice. I had my own personal glacier in the back yard. It was miserable. It was so miserable that I’m still not over it and here we are about to do it all over again ALREADY. Well, okay, maybe not for another two months, but that’s still too soon.
brings back memories for me living in tahoe. is used to get 2 cords of softwood one of hard. i would stack it myself. its been over 12 years since i bought any, but i seem to remember paying about 150 a cord for softwood.
Come visit me, I am so freaking bored! I knew I should have waited to have the surgery. Dang it.
I think I bought my wood stove somewhere around 2000, Annie. My recollection is that a cord was going for around $135 and I thought that was pricey. (My, how perceptions change.) The $90 figure is probably just about what the going rate was around here two or three years earlier. I’d love to see those prices again.
J, hang in there a few days. I’ll definitely be needing a little company long about Monday, too.

$325 a cord! I paid that much for half an acre of firewood. Of course mine is still green, and it has to be cut. And split. And dried. And stacked. And delivered to suburbia. But still . . .
