I had known for a while that gas prices were a lot higher on the west coast, but they seem to be catching up over here. When I took the lad back to school at the end of January, I paid $2.89 for a gallon of gas in the same town I bought it this time. That’s a pretty significant boost in prices within 2 months time. And boy, it makes a difference. It’s getting into the scary territory now.
The last time I went to the grocery store, I noted that our regular eggs are about the same price. The organic eggs from cage free chickens are now $3.99 a dozen, though, and that makes me think twice. The thing that almost knocked my socks off was $3.99 for a loaf of bread and peanut butter was $5.79 for a medium sized jar.
My grocery store must be feeling the pain, too...they’ve been offering $5.00 discount coupons for grocery bills over $95 since the middle of February. I have a fresh batch that are good through the end of April.
I think things might get even more difficult in another week...I read that truckers are calling for a general strike, April 1st, to protest diesel prices. They were going to call it for May 1, but now feel they can’t wait that long. If the truckers shut down, we might not have any bread or eggs to buy at any price. But who can blame them? They’re getting killed with the diesel prices. Not that I think a strike will help much, but maybe somebody in positions of authority ought to be thinking of ways to keep the truckers going if the rest of us want to eat.
We are definitely in a time of transition. To what, I don’t know.
I’m starting some seeds inside this week. Hopefully, they will sprout and survive so I can plant them outside in May. I’m thinking it’s Victory Garden time.

$3.59 here unless I can make it to Costco which was $3.46 last time we filled up. I’m dealing with the gas prices as best as possible but holy smokes - eggs are 2.99 a dozen!?! We can cut out a lot of driving and gas usage as best as possible, but people have to eat.
