I’d vote for a pointer first, a beagle second. (Or maybe the other way round.)
LOL. Dang it wait until I can come with you. I can shop vicariously through you lol.
And might I suggest getting some of the projects done before the new dog? There will be a lot of upheaval going on that might upset a new member not quite settled in. OK, Ok I will shut up and stop raining on your parade by being logical lol. But dang it wait for Me Me Me to be able to go!!!!
Cyn, I’ll have to visit the shelter over in Salem (NH) and see what happens. Probably more than once or twice or even three times. I think it probably will come down to that magic moment when one particular pup and I connect on some amazing wavelength.
Linkmeister, there are so many different breeds that I’d like. I’ve actually thought about a beagle. I grew up around a bunch of them (neighbor) and they were such sweethearts. I’ve also thought about a Corgi and even tried to hunt down a breeder, but the waiting lists are very, very long in this neck of the woods. And the possibility of another Chihuahua. I’ve never met a pointer in real life, so I am not familiar with the breed. That could change, though. I may end up meeting a lot of dogs in this process. I just wouldn’t be surprised if I end up with a genuine Heinz 57 variety, though.
J, spring is a couple of months away, at least. Not to worry. I’m not jumping into this today or tomorrow or the next day. So far, I’ve only made the decision to get another dog. It might even be a good idea to wait until the lad comes home in May. The next couple of months are going to be a little hectic around here so no, I don’t want to bring a dog into the middle of it. Your recovery had better be QUICK! I need you!
and then you can combine that with a trip to the Christmas Tree Shop!!! LOL Was there yesterday, a mob scene, whatever possessed me to go on a Saturday--I KNOW the best time is a weekday between 2:30-3. Idiot!!
I stay so far away from that shelter it isn’t funny cause I know I would come home with one of everything, including one of the horses!! Our psychotic cat is more than enough (she is a klepto--truly!!) She even stole my mother’s hearing aid the other day--I thought I would die laughing...of course I FOUND it so I could laugh; otherwise....
My neighbor had a beagle and while I love them, the dog was most assuredly challenged. Really. My vote is for a brittany spaniel cause that is what I had growing up and adored him.
I think I’ll postpone a trip to the Christmas tree shop for a couple of months. Hey...right about the time I’ll be looking at the doggies! I have so much to do in this house over the next several weeks. A basic overhaul, really. When I’m done with the basics, then it’ll be time to look for a few pretties. I’ve been holding my head in my hands on a number of different occasions lately wondering where in the world to start. I feel another blog post coming on.
We’ve been looking at retired greyhounds. They are very sweet and mellow dogs and there are a lot of rescue organizations throughout the country. Since they are bred for their temperment, as well as their athleticism, they make for a really pleasant pooch.
Ok, well. few! I probably would have been mumbling about dogs while they were putting me under this afternoon if I hadn’t read that this morning LOL.
I have to tell you, one has some very strange dreams the night before one has to have major surgery! I am really not nervous. It’s not like I haven’t had some done before lol. But wow I can’t even figure out what they might have had to do with lol. If I can remember any of them when I see you I have got to tell you about them. Too funny. See you maybe later this morning if they don’t whisk me right in!
Oh, and you know my vote would be for another Mavis dog. May- May!!!!
Crunchy, let me tellya about greyhounds. ;)
My recently departed Terry was a retired racer. She came to us when she was three years old and lived to the relatively old greyhound age of 12. Her health was somewhat compromised by the rigors of track life and its wretched awful diet. She forever after had metabolic difficulties and an extremely fragile digestive system. She was my baby girl and the sweetest, gentlest dog ever. She loved everyone. And everyone loved her, too. People just couldn’t help responding to her soulful eyes and sweet nature. I do not regret for a second the opportunity to live with her and love her. She made life so interesting on a daily basis. She had an amazing sense of humor. I laughed more with her than any other dog I’ve ever had. She appreciated a good joke. She was also a sensitive dog...she could read my moods before I knew them myself. She was always there to lend a shoulder and offer her heart when she thought I needed it. More so than any other dog I’ve known. It’s easy to wrap your arms around a greyhound’s neck and let her hold your faltering heart for a spell. They have the knack of knowing just when and how.
But I will tell you, greyhounds are very high maintenance dogs. They are fragile and they don’t seem to have a very well developed sense of self-preservation. They will (and do) eat anything if it isn’t nailed down. From the scented candles to the bag of potatoes or box of oranges or the bag of onions (greatly desired by the dog and hugely toxic) that you thought you had well out of doggy reach. At least a couple of times in the greyhound’s life you will undoubtedly find yourself making a frantic dash to the emergency animal hospital, despite your best efforts to keep them safe and sound. It is very much like living with a toddler on steroids for 9 or 10 years. You will live with a heightened sense of vigilance daily and learn to think that’s a normal day. Big couch potatoes, definitely, but when they’re counter surfing or secretly devising ways to get into the trash (or digging up the veggies in the garden), they are amazingly single-minded machines. I don’t regret it for a second and my baby girl made my life richer for her passage through it. I miss her most dreadfully. But I have to tell you, I don’t think I can do it again just now. I think a much lower maintenance dog is what’s needed here at this time.
J...see ya soon. Good luck and lotsa hugs!

you sure spring is coming? Sure doesn’t look like it.......been snowing here since about 4-decided to stay in tonight rather than slide around in it. Not sure which is annoying me more, staying in or the snow itself. My vote is for a puppy from the pound!! Go visit and see who wants to take you home!! ;)
