Cider Press Hill

One thing begets another

We did have snow last night. And the temperatures rose (briefly) four degrees above freezing...not enough to entirely turn the snow to rain. Noooo....there were about 5 inches of heavy, semi-frozen, sleety snow in the driveway this morning. And on the deck and the sidewalks, etc. And the snow plow man gave me an extra gift of about 2 feet of semi-frozen slush mounded up at the end of the driveway. That’s the sight that greeted me upon rising this morning. I thought I’d deal with it after getting a fire started and having a cup of coffee. The house was cold.

But first...a shower.

Except...I forgot. I’d done a load of wash last night and it was still hanging in the shower all soggy-like. Before I could take a shower, I’d have to wring it out some more and hang it down by the wood stove on the laundry rack....except the stove wasn’t on.

And I couldn’t start a fire anyway until I scooped some of the ash out. And I couldn’t do that because the ash bin was full to the brim. Which meant I had to take it outside and empty it in the garden. Which meant I had to put my boots on.

And if I was going to put my boots on, I might as well get bundled up the rest of the way and go shovel snow—which was something I had hoped to put off until...later.

So I put my boots on.

And grabbed the bucket of wood ash so I wouldn’t have to come back in the house with wet feet to get it after I finished shoveling.

By the time I finished shoveling the driveway and the sidewalks and the deck and a place to dump the wood ash, I was hot. Sweaty icky hot.

When I came in, the last thing I wanted was a fire in the wood stove. Mostly I wanted a cup of coffee. It was the best cup ever.

But...the laundry is still hanging in the shower and I haven’t had one yet. The stove is still cold and I’m still warm. The ash bin is empty though.

Now. About that laundry hanging in the shower. Well, we’ll get to that in the next post.
