Having a new floor put down is so exciting. It makes a house feel all brand new! Is it finished yet? Do you love it?
Cutting the water off at the main is definitely the easy part. The trick is to get the water turned back on at the right pressure, I think. Fortunately, the threaded knob was dark where it had been screwed in before and light colored where it stuck out in the air. Otherwise, I might have been in a bit of a quandary.
The main is a serious problem here. At the street it tends to get overgrown with roots, and it’s lost its handle. Even the Board of Water Supply just shakes its head at it (why they won’t fix it is another question I need to ask them at some point).
Anyway, it’s now done and most everything is put back. Here’s a link to photos at Flickr.
Oh, okay. Your set up sounds a lot different than mine. I can shut the water off to my house in my basement where the pipe comes in through the basement wall. You don’t have a basement, do you? I never gave much thought how plumbing was done without a basement or where the water shut off valves might be located.
Your new kitchen floor is beautiful! I really like that. In fact, it’s pretty similar to the pattern on my kitchen and dining room floors. Same colors, too. I still love it.
I’d be pretty happy to take your kitchen, too. All those windows and counter space! I LOVE all your windows!!! Sheesh, if I could have ‘em, I could start an entire garden in mid-winter in time for spring planting. I drool with deep envy!
Basement? Qu’est-ce que c’est basement?
No. The original house is post-and-pier construction, meaning no foundation slab, just a bunch of four-by-fours on solid concrete square blocks about one foot by one foot. So there’s crawl space underneath the floor (that’s where the hot water heater and its tanks are, and on the other side of the house, where the pool pump is), but no basement.
The playroom was originally meant to be a carport, so it’s got a concrete slab foundation with vinyl sheeting (that’s the next to be replaced, in another year or so). The house is one of the models, and the builders turned that room into a sales office back in 1968-1969. We bought in 1970.
Yeah, the windows and the counter space are nice attributes to have.

Ours wasn’t nearly as eventful as yours, thank heaven. The day after, however, has been full of (planned) excitement, what with all the furniture (including refrigerator) having to be moved out of the kitchen in order to prep for new vinyl. The old floor has been essentially mortared and the new stuff goes down tomorrow.
I was lucky; the water line to the fridge had a shut-off valve. I was terrified I’d have to cut off the main water and go from there.
