I am stunned to think that ANYONE would have the temerity to assail you for this.
I admire you a great deal for all of your efforts. Sooner or later, most of us are going to be dragged kicking and screaming into mandatory reductions in our consumption, and you have done it willingly and very thoughtfully. That shows a degree of discipline and selflessness that most of us lack. I do not know that I could do what you’re doing voluntarily, even though I know full well I should be.
As Linkmeister commented, do not let the bastards get you down.
Yes, I’m still eating animal protein. My farmer’s market offers their own cuts of meat grown on their lands. No antibiotics or growth hormones and fed on grass and other organic feeds during the winter. They have only a small amount, but it’s good. Once I got past the purple meat thing, I couldn’t believe how much better it tastes than regular store-bought meat. It’s really tender, too. They’ve just introduced elk meat (they have a tiny herd). Has anyone tasted that before? Is it good?

I’ve seen it happen to others who are participating in the project, so it didn’t come as a surprise to me in one sense, but it does still surprise me that people feel the need to attack over something so totally innocuous. Or so it seems to me. Maybe it feels threatening to some? I don’t know. It won’t get me down and won’t make me stop, in any case. Just disappointing, I guess.
Hey Brian, thanks.
As I said above, I’ve come across some really nasty remarks directed toward a few who are more public about their participation in the project. The emails can be quite awful, too. Maybe part of it is the medium...people just don’t hold back when they’re not looking you in the face or have anything invested in you. Beats me. But it is a curiosity. It’s not very pleasant, but I think what interests me more is why is there so much hostility toward a project like this? How does one go about diffusing that hostility? Is it possible?
As you say, at some point, we aren’t going to have a choice in the matter. I’d like to get a head start. That was a large part of my motivation and that’s not exactly an altruistic motive, but it was enough get me going.
And I should add, part of what the project is supposed to do is show others how every day people can, over time, add steps to reducing consumption without pain or an overnight change in lifestyle. It’s very incremental.
Well, for sure I am impressed. I am like Brian in that I know I could not do what you are doing voluntarily.....no real will power, but doesn’t mean I disagree!! I continue to read it and stop every once in a while to say, WOW, how does she do it and what a good person she must be (or as I did the other day to say what the heck is a navy shower)!! Quickly followed by, I never could and good would not be my middle name!!
Two things...can’t you burn the junk mail or is that a polluter? And two, Smolak Farm in North Andover (it is near Brooks School) is offering a half bushel of peaches for $20. I may go get some and then freeze them. “MAY”. You would like this place, tiny farm stand, but yummy things. We always get our Christmas trees there. They have cut your own, too. Anyway, thought it might interest you.
Ah but you see Cyn, even a handful of years ago I’d have died laughing if ANYONE had suggested that I would commit myself to a project like this and cut 90% of my consumption. 90%? Like you want me to just curl up and die or what??!
And that’s part of why I joined the project. I have to deliver or look kind of bad. And I don’t want to look bad. I mean, that’s a pretty normal feature of humanity.
But yes, anyone can do this. That’s the truth. But people come to that decision or find the motivation in their own ways and in their own time. Of course, I’m starting to get a little frantic with the way the earth is responding to global warming and over the ever increasing reality of peak oil. I’d just as soon not have the ocean waves lapping at my front steps. Ideally, I’d like everyone to start doing this RIGHT NOW. But it’s not going to happen RIGHT NOW. The idea will spread and people will try something and then something else and one more thing that will lead to something else. It all adds up and that’s the idea.
My chimney sweep said that burning glossy paper is bad for the chimney. It has bad chemicals in it. I didn’t know that before...used to use it to start wood stove fires along with newspaper (which is fine to use).
That’s a great price for peaches! I paid $8 for a bag of 6 a couple of weeks ago (at the apple farm, which also has peaches). Unfortunately, I don’t have a freezer right now. Sigh. I don’t think I’m up for canning a bushel of them, either.
I’d imagine elk is an acquired taste. I’ve tried buffalo burgers, and they’re way more lean than beef is. That would take a little getting used to.
I’ve heard good things about elk steaks, so that’s where I’d start.
What the heck. I overcame my squeamishness about purple meat...one day soon I will bravely grab an elk steak and try it. I won’t promise to acquire a taste for it, though. ;)
Ok, to balance out the meanies: Wow! I really think what you’re doing is admirable. It’s gotten me to unplug the stereo set that was on standby. And it’s gotten me to try turning the water off when I brush my teeth - even a California drought couldn’t break me of that habit.
I am very impressed with what you are doing. And you are enjoying it! Poo-poo on the nay sayers! Hey, I remember when I use to go bonkers turning off all your little lights all the time lol.
I have managed to get my electric bill down (now that the AC doesn’t have to be running allthefreakingtime) to around 145 or so. Wouldn’t you love to have that every month?
I think we are going to blow your gas budget for next week going to NH Sunday. Hey does it count if I pay for half of it? LOL. It is not looking good for Saturday so far. But I still have Wed and Thurs to try and find someone.
Steph, that’s really cool. Thanks for telling me that. You made me smile.
J, I remember those days. I only now appreciate how batty I must have driven you with *every* light on in the house. And probably two televisions blaring at the same time plus a computer (with a CRT monitor) that was on 24/7. Things change, don’t they? ;) I’ll bring the kill-a-watt meter with me this weekend so you can take it home and give it whirl. You’ll have a blast playing with that!
RE the gas...as long as you are in the car with me, I get to half the amount used for my side of the ledger. It won’t take much gas to get there and back, either...as long as we don’t get lost. LOL!
I looked at the Highland Games website yesterday and saw that tickets for most of the special stuff going on, on Saturday, have already been sold out. So if we go on Sunday, we won’t really miss much. All the exhibits will still be there. Along with a few games and whatnot. There will still be plenty to see and do. I hope that I can find a lovely tartan shawl while we’re there. I wonder what the Fraser tartan looks like....;)

Are you eating no protein at all?
