We recently went through this, except the dog somehow managed to escape the skunking part, but the skunk still let fly - right up against the side of the house below where we sleep with our bedroom window open.
The smell was so bad that it woke me from a dead sleep and so fried my sense of smell that it smelled like burnt plastic or something. Kind of like being too close to the forest to see the trees. It took me 4 days to convince my husband that it was indeed a skunk and not the wiring in the house.
So we washed the walls down with murphy’s oil soap - then vinegar - then finally hydrogen peroxide seemed to do the trick. We washed every bit of stuff that was hanging around the room that we could - bedding, etc.
And then finally we put out bowls of burnt vinegar (read it on the internet) and that really worked to remove the smell.
I’m still considering painting the walls though.
Well, you won’t be seeing me at your door any time soon
I thought of you, J. Always do when I smell a skunk. If this was your house, you’d have had to move out for a few days.
Joann, that skunk oil, when it’s up close, really does smell different. I can’t even describe it. Did you taste it too? It’s as if the oil hanging in the scent in the air glommed right on to my tongue. When I went out to buy the vinegar, I could still taste it. I raised a few eyebrows in the store, too.
Terry came flying in the door before I even realized what had happened. She went right to her bed and rolled around on it trying to get the stink off. I’ve thrown the bed out. There was just no way I’d ever get it cleaned or completely de-scented. She didn’t get a chance to touch anything else, so after several scrubbings with almost an entire bottle of shampoo and many bottles of white vinegar poured over her and worked into her fur, with more shampoo and rinsing, she came out smelling pretty good. There is a residual odor to her, but it’s very faint. I’ve mopped the floors with Spic n Span with a rinse of vinegar. I’ve also been boiling vinegar in the microwave. It smells like a pickle factory in here, but that’s a lot better than skunk. The odor in the house has mostly dissipated now.

How many times does a dog have to get skunked before it learns to leave skunks alone?! Clearly, more than 4!
And, of course, it couldn’t be on a week night or a Saturday when the grocery stores are open until 11:00. Oh no, she had to wait until Sunday night when the stores close at 9:00. The largest container of white vinegar I could find was PINT size. At the convenience store. I bought many, many PINT sized containers.
Terry has had THE bath and she smells tolerable. My house still reeks of skunk, though. It probably will for a few days, too.
