Cider Press Hill

At last! Fresh strawberries!

I’ve been haunting the farmer’s market for the past week, hoping to see fresh strawberries. The market is run by one farming family...the entire family is involved and so they’ve gotten to know me. Yesterday afternoon I stopped by and a couple of the younger sibs shouted out..."They’ll be here tomorrow morning at 10:30!” Oh, the excitement.

So I stopped just before noon today and there they were. Quarts and quarts of bright red, plump strawberries with the little green topknots still attached. They looked as if they’d been freshly picked. The green leaves on top weren’t even wilted yet.

I bought two quarts and a little bag of the three onion-garlic mini-baguettes, which have become my favorites. I paid up and rushed out to the car.

The moment of truth. I selected a big strawberry and bit the bottom off of it. The rush of flavor was like fireworks. Tart and sweet and juicy and tender and oh my goodness. My mouth was giddy. It was worth the wait. There is nothing in this world to compare with a fresh ripe strawberry.

The ones you can get at the supermarkets all year ‘round are mere shadows of fresh ripe ones right from the field. Fresh strawberries don’t crunch, for one thing.

The sweetness, the juiciness, the tartness, the tenderness...all there. A little bit of juice actually dribbled down my chin. My fingers were covered with strawberry juice. I sat in the car and selected a few more strawberries to eat before I finally left the parking lot.

When I came home, Terry smelled the strawberries. She loves strawberries. So I gave her a couple of nice plump ones, too. Strawberries may be one of the few foods she will chew and she extracted every last little bit of goodness out of her strawberries.

Strawberry season will only last for another week to 10 days. I haven’t decided yet whether I’ll preserve some for winter or just gobble every fresh strawberry I can get my hands on this year. I should preserve some. But I can’t stop eating them. They are so good and I’ve waited soooo long.
