$3.78 - 2 cans SpamSpoken like a true Hawaiian.
$7.47 for a dozen tortillas? Even when you call ‘em wraps, that set’s this Texas boys head a spinnin’. Down here we pick up 20 made in the store as you watch (the women in the family like to carry them through the store as hand warmers) for about 3 bucks. Other than that it all looks normal…
My grocery tab included a $10.38 card club savings.
These grocery tabs sure do add up fast, don’t they?
A Hawaiian Spam favorite. That might be worth trying to make.
Gary, I might be the slightest bit envious. Do you also get the sundried tomato ones or the spinach ones? Plain old tortillas cost just about as much here, though. I love my wraps.
Last year I know that I was only spending about $85 a week for the lad and me. Plus the two fur kids. Those days are gone.
PS. I’m pleased to report that my new cheapo coffee maker makes 12 cups of tasty coffee in 10 minutes. Sure beats the 17 minutes it took the fancy coffee maker to brew 10 cups.
Gimme a break, N, we were flat out of the stuff.
We eat the average, about six cans a year. Baked, mostly. Neither of us are fond of that Spam Musubi that our host links to.
2.79 - Hummus tahini (8 oz)
4.49 - Taboule (14 oz)
If you have the time, it is quite satifiying to make these. Hummus freezes well, and tastes a lot better without all those nasty emulsifying ingredients.
For $4 you ough to find enough bulgar to keep you in tabouli for a year!
Something is very wrong here
7.47 - 12 Cedar’s sundried tomato and basil
wraps (like tortillas)
looks like you can buy a 10 oz package online for $1.45

I am guessing you are shopping at Wild Oats or whatever it is called these days...my hubby keeps asking me if I would shop there and I keep telling him not until I get myself a much better paying job (which would be when hell freezes over)--their prices are outrageous. I divide my shopping between Hannaford’s (one just opened up not too far from me) and Market Basket. But everything is taking huge jumps. I do buy organic milk and it jumped $1 in one week for a half gallon. I paid either 3.49 or 3.99 last time.....when I had young boys, we went through at least 4 gallons of milk a week, now of course, it is mostly what I use for my coffee and for cereal and baking so do not use all that much on a weekly basis.
It is totally scary, I don’t know how families with kids do it anymore. FOr sure incomes aren’t going to keep up.....
Nope, I was shopping at Shaw’s, Cyn. Prices at Super Stop and Shop are as bad (and way worse for produce). Haven’t checked Market Basket in a while, though. I got tired of shopping there because I could never find what I wanted and the stuff at their deli counter and seafood counter ALWAYS turns bad on me within a day or two. Every now and then I go back to retest that theory and yep, still end up tossing out my roast beef after a couple of days.
Those Cedar’s wraps are $2.49 per package of 4. Now, when I first started buying them, there were something like 8 in a package. Then it went down to six. Now we’re down to four in a package. I bought three packages because I use them almost every day. I love filling my wraps with hummus and taboule and a bit of grilled chicken. Other people eat sandwiches...I eat those. But darn they’re getting expensive. I’ll have to check online and see about getting their bulk orders. They should be freezable.
I’ll also look into making my hummus and taboule, Steph. The thought never occurred to me. It’s worth a try.
Oh, Shaw’s owns Wild Oats or Wild Harvest whatever it is called or maybe they own Shaw’s, but they are connected.
I agree with you on MB - for some things - it should never happen cause their volume is unreal, they do extraordinarily well - but. A funny story--many, MANY years ago, I bought fresh fish there and the next day it was stinking fish. Now, without going into details, I will just say that that the father of my goddaughters (who is also one of our best friends) is connected with that particular market in a BIG way. SO, I called and gave him a piece of mind (and that is SO rare, I do not like to trade on a friendship that way). Well, the next morning at 6AM, my doorbell rang, and it was the buyer for all the fresh fish at the time, he came in and apologized, then explained how they get their fish, where etc, and said that should never ever have happened and then he gave me enough fresh fish to feed a third world country. It was hilarious - I could have killed my friend, but he apparently went up one side and down another on someone so......... I gave away most of it, cause you can only freeze it just so long. Several years ago, I was a little po’d about a fresh turkey I had ordered - supposed to have been 26lbs and they gave me a 21. I was all set to complain, then realized the next day I would probably have a FLOCK of live turkeys in my backyard so kept my mouth shut!! Very very difficult for me, I might add!! ;)
If you have a Hannafords around, try it, I do love them (of course, I hide anything with their name on it cause I would prefer my friend not know I shop LOTS of different places!!). They have lots of the things I cannot find in MB (and that is cause MB pushes their own brands to the point of annoyance), but some of their prices are way higher.
Hannafords wasn’t a familiar name so I looked it up on Google. Whadya know, they have a store in Hampton, NH. It’s less than 10 miles. I’ll have to check them out. Do they use those customer savings/discount cards, too? Have I mentioned lately how much I hate those things?? I don’t have one for Market Basket, either. It’s been a long while since I’ve done regular grocery shopping there, but I’m supposing they have them, too.
That’s a great fish story! It’s nice to know someone with that kind of influence. What in the world to do with that much fish, though...well besides throw a party or give it away as you did. Yes, it’s a very good thing you didn’t mention the turkey incident. That could have been hilarioius!
If your in New England, Hannaford has to be one best and most superiour supermarkets around. There is always new and exciting things to try and the atmosphere is one that makes you feel like its more than a grocery store. The company takes pride in quality food (definately see it in the produce and meat), as well as awsome customer service. Everyone is so friendly. They don’t have those annoying discount cards like Shaws, Market Basket and Stop & Shop have. If its on sale, you get it on sale, now hastles! Hannaford is great and I will continue to shop there!
Thanks, Aaron. That’s an excellent recommendation and I do intend to spend some time wandering through the store. It sounds really inviting.
