The grass dilemma

My grass is growing already. Except where it’s not. The places where it’s not growing have caused me endless trouble and, probably, expense—though I haven’t kept track. Knowing would make me want to bang my head against the wall.

The front side yard receives full sun all day long. And the grass grows in almost pure sand. If you’ve ever had the chance to walk barefoot on a sun baked beach, you know how hot it gets. I debated with myself this morning, briefly, about putting new seed down out there. But why? Even if I can get it to germinate with copious amounts of daily watering, it’ll still turn crispy by mid-summer. Wasted water, wasted effort. I am ready to cry “uncle!”

So, I’m thinking. How do I turn that area into something that looks nice? I could bring in a load of topsoil and create raised islands for flowers, herbs, or whatever. With tons of mulch on top. It could be pretty. Maybe with a tree to provide a little shade, too. That seems to be what a few of the neighbors have done with good results. I simply give up trying to grow grass where it doesn’t want to grow.

I need to get out my graph paper and start drawing design ideas. Out on the deck! It’s 80° out today. Whoohoo!!
