To Comcast or not...

Comcast called me this afternoon. I was curious what their current pitch is, so I answered the phone.

While I have been generally satisfied as a Verizon customer, I still think they charge too much for what they offer. My internet speed is middling at best (I pay for more than what I’m getting, which is often the case with DSL). Sometimes it’s downright painfully slow. The phone is okay. Sometimes the connection sounds as if we are talking through a long tin can, though. The television is DirecTV, bundled in with the Verizon products. It’s okay, but the TiVo box responds to the remote control like molasses creeping downhill on a cold January day.

I talked with the Comcast rep to see what I could get out of her. She acknowledged that Comcast is taking a hit from the competition in the state (Verizon’s FIOS is Comcast’s largest concern, currently) and they are trying to win back customers. They can offer me a year’s subscription for phone (long distance and voice mail included), television, and (really) high speed internet for $99/month. After a year, the price goes up to $145 per month. But, she conceded, if I wait a month or two, I can probably get a 2 year discounted bundle for the same $99. That sounds interesting.

I told her that I’ve been thinking about getting rid of television completely. But, I might be interested in the basic 13-channel cable. She said they can offer a discounted bundle for $69 that includes basic cable instead of the 70+ channels. With DVR, if I’d like. Also, if I want to connect a second television to cable, I can do that without a set-top box. Just plug the cable in. Can’t do that with DirecTV.

Well, I told her that I’m not ready to make a decision yet. I’m still considering my options. Maybe if I wait another month or two this price and features war between Verizon and Comcast will really heat up and yield some even better deals. Sounds as if Comcast is getting a little worried. Their pain, my gain?
