The next Sweeney Todd

Listening to a jazz station on radio, I heard that Johnny Depp is teaming up with Tim Burton to do the film version of Sweeney Todd this year. He will be doing his own singing.

I looked on the web to see what the story is. It’s his habit of “becoming his character” prior to filming his roles. By the sounds of things, he must be a real treat to live with these days, running around the house practicing his throat slashing techniques with real razor blades, to the strains of the 13th century Latin Hymn - Dies Irae (Day of Wrath).

That gave me my first good laugh of the morning.

Alan Rickman (Judge Turpin), Helena Bonham Carter (Mrs. Lovett), and Sacha Baron Cohen (Signor Adolfo Pirelli) will also be in the film. I can’t wait to see this movie.

My concern would be that Rickman, Depp, and Cohen are all so firmly identified with previous roles (Snape, Captain Jack and Borat) that the audience will have trouble identifying them as any other characters.

However, if the crowd can get past that, it could be a real hoot.

You have a point. But with the make-up and costuming they’re liable to do on these characters, they might end up looking like nothing we’ve ever seen. No way Depp’s Todd could be even in the same universe with Cap’n Jack. wink

With Tim Burton at the helm, can you *imagine* the thoroughly creepy effects? With song and dance, even? Oh :::shiver:::
