Storm coming

So. Everyone is all excited around here because there is a huge winter storm coming. The trouble, as usual, is that we don’t know if we’re going to get snow of if we’ll get a combination of snow and freezing rain. Interior New England will be walloped with a foot or two of snow, but here on the coast it’s always a question mark until the storm actually arrives. Will the storm hug the coastline and bring us rain or will it veer out into the water and bring us blizzard conditions? Stay tuned. I’m betting on a little snow and lots of rain and freezing rain. The rest of yas, enjoy your snow. Hmpf.

The other part of the classic nor’easter is the wind and the churning seas. We’re being told to expect 20 foot seas and wicked winds. That means a lot of coastal flooding and significant beach erosion. After one of these powerful storms, I fully expect to go out to Plum Island and see a batch of houses toppled or swept away. They’re already sitting on the raw edge of nothing. The romance of living at the edge of the sea is a nice myth. Most of the time it is pretty, but when one of these storms blows through, the ocean is absolutely terrifying and erases every other romantic image from mind. I surely wouldn’t encourage anyone to buy a place where that kind of fury unleashes. These storms are a fact of life here and they need to be respected.
