Eternal hanging on

I have come to the conclusion that life is one endless To Do List that involves crossing things off it to gain that momentary small burst of satisfaction and pleasure. Because, as William James (Henry’s brother) said, “There is nothing so fatiguing as the eternal hanging on of an uncompleted task.” To Do Lists seem to be an entirely artificial means to achieving satisfaction, but whatever. Satisfaction and pleasure are what they are and it can’t get much simpler than that. Except that in order for a To Do List to work, you actually have to do the things on it so you can cross them off. That’s the sticky wicket.
