The weather turns

Right at this very moment the outdoor thermometer reads 70°. According to the current weather forecasts, this will be the last day we see such a warm temperature for the remainder of October. Unless we have a late and temporary rebirth of summer in November, I’d guess that this is probably it for the season. All my windows and doors are open and I’m basking in the warmth. I’ve also been outside doing some clean-up and odds and ends. Mostly just being outside. I need to store all the warmth and sunshine that I can.

The sky is a deep azure today, also something that we probably won’t see much longer. As the days shorten, the sky blue turns more anemic. It’s what I call a cold blue sky. I’m not ready to give up summer yet. And I must say that the past month has been as perfect a late summer as we’ve had in years. Mild dry days with hardly a hint of humidity.

That ends in the wee hours. With what sounds like the first nor’easter of the season beginning to brew off the mid-Atlantic coast, we’re going to be wet and cold. With wind, lots of wind. Wood stove weather.

And apple pie weather. I’m in the mood for a fresh apple pie. Want some?
