Well, the offer to come to Roundrock to collect as much oak and hickory firewood as you want is still open. You must provide the transportation and all of the hard work involved, but I’ll bring beer.
We’re not going to burn wood in our fireplace this year. We had it cleaned a couple of months ago and the fellow ran a camera up the chimney. He reported finding a breach in the firewall that could lead to a chimney fire. He could fix it for us, of course, for several thousand dollars. Or we could just not have fires. (Or we could gamble that he was making up a problem for us in order to sell a solution to us.)
Not long after my youngest (the twins) went to college, I had second thoughts about all of those years of encouraging them to go. I found that I had to mow the lawn and take out the trash and all of of those other chores that I had assigned to them as soon as they were big enuf to do them. So it is with you, I guess. Without the Lad around, you must do all of this work yourself. When’s his first home visit weekend?
If I lived a little closer to Roundrock, that would be a sweet deal!
Now that you can’t burn wood in your fireplace, you’ll want to more than ever. Maybe it’s worth a second opinion? How does one repair such a problem? A chimney liner or something? I recall having a chimney problem several houses back where we had to have a steel chimney liner installed and even back then it was very expensive.
Yes, without the lad around, I get to do all the work myself. Although, J came over last week and mowed the lawn because she ENJOYS it and offered to help with the wood stacking. It’s supposed to rain tomorrow so I don’t believe there will be any wood stacking going on. The sun is due back this weekend so we know what I’ll be doing.
I shot the lad a quick note tonight advising him that he may count his blessings that there are six hours between him and the pile of wood in the driveway. I am sure he agrees completely.
The first he’ll be back home is Christmas vacation.
I so envy you and your wod stove Kate!! It would be so nice
I’ll bet you would enjoy having one, Lynn. They are work, but the heat is so luxurious. It’s prepaid heat and I get a lot more of it for the dollar than using the furnace. Midway through the winter, though, I do get tired of hauling wood and feeding the stove, but not enough to stop doing it.
wood is cheap around here this year. last winter was very mild and many woodchucks had a surplus
yikes kate, wood is only 75 for a face-cord basically 1/2 a cord.
Hi Karl! Between you and Pablo, you’re making a good case for Missouri. Maybe you just have more trees than we do? Wood is very expensive here, but, still, much much less than heating with gas. After asking around the neighborhood, I find that even heating with expensive wood, I’m still paying less than half of what my neighbors pay in gas bills. I sure wouldn’t mind $150/cord wood though!

Yeah, it’s a little higher than last year - $275 a cord for 16” split, well-seasoned hard wood. Not as high as I’d expected, though.
