First care package

The first official care package went out today. I undoubtedly have a lot to learn about care packages. For one thing, mailing them out on time would be a good place to start. But that’s another story. The requested homemade treats didn’t make it this time, either. I fell back on purchased treats because my baking gene was still on vacation. Nevertheless, I doubt that the lad’s favorite bakery-bought chocolate chips will disappoint. And per someone’s suggestion, I tucked in a box of microwave macaroni and cheese. Plus his brand new glasses, a funny card, a package of batteries (with a cool little flashlight), and the other stuff he forgot/wanted.

Naturally, I arrived at the UPS store at a quarter to five without a box. The store manager is always happy to give away boxes—he has an array of shapes and sizes piled up in the back room. I stuffed everything in the box and he weighed it and taped it up for me. While we were fiddling with that, a couple of other customers walked up to the counter. Since they weren’t sending anything by UPS, they had to wait until my care package was assembled in time for 5:00 pick-up. They didn’t seem to mind a bit.

They were very curious about what I was sending. Care packages seem to spark immediate interest and offers of free advice. And lots of memories of what lit their eyes up back in the day. The contents of my care package were duly examined and commented on—no kidding. These two customers (one woman and one man) were really into it and the package was finally sent on its way with as many of their best wishes as mine.

And I now also have a new list of possibilities for future care packages. I had not thought of a roll of quarters, but that topped the list of favorites. Good idea. Also suggested—iTune gift certificates, blank CDs, beef jerky, home dried apples, trail mix, photos of any changes being made to the house while the student is away, and the home town newspaper. These are great ideas.

Any other tried and true ideas are always welcome, too.
