Cider Press Hill

It must be Monday

Nothing like starting the week off with a bang.

British Petroleum (BP) has indefinitely closed down the nation’s largest oil field in Prudhoe Bay (Alaska) because the pipeline is leaking and badly corroded. That’s about 1000 wells out of service and there’s no telling how long it will take to get the pipeline replaced. So, going into hurricane season we’re already down 400,000 barrels a day. That’s about 8% of US production and about 2.6% of our daily supply, including imports. Watch those gas pump prices pop.

Iran has threatened to embargo oil to the West if we enforce sanctions against them over the UN Resolution demanding they stop uranium enrichment. Oh joy.

Global warming made visible. Scary.

I could really go for some good news today. Anyone have any?

Oh...Riverbend’s blog, Baghdad Burning, is being taken to the stage in the UK. Her blog has also been published in the UK and nominated for a major literary award. That doesn’t surprise me. She writes beautifully. If you’ve never read her blog before, I’d recommend starting from the very beginning of her archives. She’s led an incredible life these past 3 years. She’s a 24 year old Iraqi woman who, she says, survived the war and “that’s all you need to know. It’s all that matters.” She deserves to be recognized. I hope her book and this production are very successful for her.
