I still get a lot of them “from” Wells Fargo, with whom I have never done any business. Plus the Chase ones and at least one for PayPal every day. Haven’t gotten the IRS one yet, though.
There are untold numbers of gullible people out there, people who should know better and apparently don’t. A friend of mine got sucked into one of these stupid scams—a very computer literate person, I should add—and she ended up with identity theft and a world of hurt.
Oh, yeah. “There but for the grace of God” comes to mind.
Phone scams are on the rise, too. I took a call a couple of weeks ago from a supposed finance company wanting to refinance my house for the ridiculously low rate of 1.4%. I played along for a bit. The person on the other end insisted that he needed my social security number and other information in order to expedite a refinance. No one should ask for or give out a social security number over the phone. That call reeked of scam.
Likewise, when a so-called non-profit calls and insists it has to have your credit card number RIGHT NOW and it is impossible for them to do a transaction through the mail because of the time sensitive nature, I hear loud warning bells. Sorry if you’re legit, but I’m not giving that over the phone. Your time constraints are not my problem.
I suppose we all have our gullible blind spots and eventually someone might succeed in getting what they need to steal identity. I’ll never say never, but I am far less likely to give *any* information out over the phone than ever before.

I think I even got one purportedly from the IRS recently.
What amuses me is the shotgun approach some of these clowns use: “If we send out enough of these things which are ostensibly from XXXX bank, we’ll probably find someone who actually uses that financial institution.”
