Cider Press Hill

A bug

This little fella stopped by for a visit one day last summer and I didn’t know what it was. I set the photograph aside and kinda forgot about it. I just found the photo again and decided to hunt down an identification. Well, that took a while.

This is an American Carrion Beetle, otherwise known as a Necrophila americana. Isn’t that a nice name to go through life with?

For the super gross story about the role this handsome little fellow plays in nature’s waste removal, check this link out. Well, somebody has to do it. I thought he looked pretty clean, though. No passengers that I could see.

I’d never seen a Carrion Beetle before and I am pleased to finally know what it is. Nature must be ticking along as designed around the neighborhood.
