Cider Press Hill

Three things

I leaped out of bed this morning with an eye to the outdoors. It’s beautiful today. Lots of yard work to do—grass mowing, weed whacking, deck sealing, getting my hands in the dirt....

The most unusual thing happened. I forgot to make a pot of coffee. When most people who know me think of me, they associate me with a cup of coffee permanently glued to one hand. My neighbors would think the world was coming to and end if they saw me leave the house without a cup of coffee in my hand. And there I was merrily toiling away in the yard without the proper fuel or a coffee cup in sight.

Now, I have a ferocious headache that the 5:00 (and first) brew didn’t touch. Too late. This is a headache that will survive aspirin, Advil, or Tylenol. I just try to carry on my thoughts between the rhythmic banging.

Second item: I’ve said before that I am death to lawn mowers. Recalling that my next door neighbor generously offered to share his lawn mower with me, I went out to fire it up today and it wouldn’t start. Just wouldn’t. The neighbor happened to be out and saw my difficulty. He came over to make sure it had gas (I’d already checked) and he gave a few mighty pulls on the cord. Nothing. He said his son-in-law had just used it yesterday and it had worked fine.

I apologized for touching it. Even looking at it. It appears to be inevitable. But he laughed and said I was being silly.

Well, am I? History seems to suggest....

Third item: My two eastern redbud trees have been ordered via mail order and should be shipped by Friday or early next week. They’re coming by UPS so I wouldn’t expect to see them until the following Friday at the earliest. But they are ordered. Little things...only about 2 feet high, but I’d been advised that starting with smaller stock allows them to acclimate or ‘grow into their environment’ more easily. I dunno. Sounded sensible. We’ll see. If they die it’ll be a lot less painful digging them out of the ground than the local nursery’s $150 trees, let me tell ya.
