Cider Press Hill

Rainy day

It looks as if we are only allowed one sunny day per week. This morning I watched the sunrise turn the sky bright red. Now the sky is entirely covered in clouds and the humidity has risen to wet blanket in the face levels. Rain is due to arrive shortly. This time I look forward to it.

Last evening my next door neighbor politely and a little shyly told me that I really ought to water the new grass seed in order for it to germinate. But I pointed out that since its supposed to rain for the next two days, I thought I’d save water and let nature take care of it for me. That’s the reason I sowed the grass seed yesterday. He allowed as how that was a pretty good idea.

And then he noticed that I’d reseeded the large patches in his side yard where the grubs killed his grass, too. He was so surprised, but oh so pleased. He rents and his landlord would never think of doing it. This neighbor and his wife are older folks and their health is very fragile so if their kids can’t get over to do the lawn work, I’ll do it. Since I had the seed and I was out there, it would have been silly not to do it. He’s a sweet man and I like it when he smiles.

Meanwhile, the lad had to be at school by 7:30. Today is turn in books day and vespers practice and assorted other practices for graduation events. He really didn’t want to go, but a no-show would result in no graduation. Graduation isn’t for another 10 days, but I think it’s a good idea for them to stay somewhat tethered to the school in the interim. I’ve noticed that he and his friends have already distanced themselves from the school just in the last week. In their minds, it’s over and they’re ready to move on. Demands for their presence at school will be pretty constant for the next 10 days. I think that’s a wise plan.

They’ll be practicing outside today, so they’ll get good and wet. The assistant principal told them they wouldn’t melt if it rained, so show up rain or shine. I felt a little guilty for being happy about the rain today. I didn’t say anything about being glad. That would have sounded kinda mean. If it rains on graduation day, I’ll be singing a different tune, but the same rule applies. Eh, you won’t melt. Wear a slicker and bring an umbrella. We wouldn’t be the first.
