Cider Press Hill

More popular culture

The lad and I took in a matinee showing of The Da Vinci Code this afternoon. There were exactly four of us in the theater.

Now, we’ve both read the book and neither of us was impressed with the idea of casting Tom Hanks in the lead role though we tried to keep an open mind going in. But it was a long movie and turned out to be a mere caricature of the book. A lot was left out, Tom Hanks hardly had a chance to shut up because he had to ‘narrate’ what couldn’t be filmed, and his hair was just dreadful. He either didn’t know how or wasn’t afforded the opportunity to give his character any dimension. And some of the historical flashbacks were jarring and reminiscent of a low budget docu-drama. Unless you’ve read the book, I’m not entirely sure you’d know what all was going on.

The movie was disappointing and I’m glad we decided to go to a matinee rather than a full-priced showing. Ian McKellen *was* a bright spot, though.
