Guilty Secret

I’ve been watching American Idol in an abbreviated form—on TiVo. Which means, fast forwarding through the hour long programs in just under 15 minutes. Sometimes less. Often a lot less. But I’ve kept up.

Last night, however, I sat through the whole thing without fast forwarding through anything but the commercials.

I don’t like Kat. She sings well and she probably has some sort of career ahead of her, but she just annoys me to death. And I don’t think she’s paid much attention to all the good (and free) advice she’s been given. Taylor annoys me much less. I like him, really. But there has been little in his performances that leads me to believe he has a great deal of range. Maybe I’m just not seeing it. I threw up my hands when Elliot and Chris were booted off and figured it had now become a popularity contest.

Anyway, after I caught the TiVo’d program, there was still time to vote for one of the two. First time all season, I fetched the phone. Scanning back through the program, I copied Taylor’s number and gave it a try. Busy signal. I hit the redial button...oh...about a hundred times. Still busy.

Out of curiosity, I dialed Kat’s number. Didn’t even ring and I got her perky little voice thanking me for voting for her. Oh well. I voted for Kat.

Then I tried Taylor’s number again. Still busy.

Something tells me that Taylor is going to walk away with an embarrassingly large percentage of the votes.

And what did I hear on the radio this morning? That, last week, more than 50 million American Idol viewers voted and that is about half the number of people who voted in the 2004 election. We take our television entertainment almost as seriously as our politics, looks like.
