Mockingbird nest

There has been a lot of mockingbird activity around one of the evergreen shrubs out in the side front yard the past day or two. They are always around and I hadn’t thought that much about it until I stood in the back door watching this morning. There are two mockingbirds and they have a nest inside the shrub. That much was clear.

Curiosity got the better of me and I wandered out to see if I could take a peek. Well, no. The mockingbirds set me straight right away. One of them dive bombed me and the other anxiously fluttered around over my head, shrieking and squawking. The dive bomber had every apparent intention of drilling a hole in my head so I beat a pretty hasty retreat. It was kind of funny, really.

They have settled back in and peace reigns again. I’ll just watch from a safe distance.

The nest is well protected and it won’t be in danger from any other birds. Northern Mockingbirds are good sized birds (at least they seem big when they’re attacking you) and these two are extremely aggressive about protecting their nest. Even a cat would have difficulty getting to it without being seriously wounded in the attempt. I think they’ll be fine.
