When most of us think of Hawaii, we don’t think of gray, drizzly, and gloomy. That’s been happening a lot lately, hasn’t it? What’s the deal anyway?
You mean, besides our 43 consecutive days of rain in March and April that resulted in 7 deaths from a breached dam? A dam, mind you, that most of us didn’t even know existed, along with about 130 others, also made of earth.
That phenomenon was apparently the result of a pressure ridge which ordinarily would blow right through but was stalled overhead by some other weather whatsit which was pushing back from Mexico (or something like that). The spooky thing was all the thunderstorms; we never have thunderstorms. Usually Hawai’i has “windward and mauka showers” overnight (mauka means “toward the mountains”; makai means “toward the sea") and sunny days, but this year has confounded everyone.
... you must know the little ditty about sailors taking warning, ... and that leaves turned over mean rain, and cows lying down in a pasture means rain .... and , um ... well, my point is , your Dad was absolutely right.
Yes Linkmeister, I remember your photos and remarks about your 43 days of rain and it was so strange hearing about it. That’s just not supposed to happen in Hawaii. Not that anyone needs to tell you that. Weather has been whacky all over. I didn’t know that you normally don’t have thunderstorms. That must have been unsettling for people who never experienced one before. Must have been some freaked out kids and pets.
Yep Lynn, it’s the old farmer’s way of predicting the weather and it seems to work pretty well on a day to day basis. I need to pay more attention.
Yup, as a farmer’s daughter, I learned all those too. And, for the most part they still work...mare’s tails mean rain, mackeral sky and on it goes. Ring around the moon......there are so many--there has to be something to them.
For what it is worth, we were driving up north last night (a Cinco de Mayo dinner a day late??) and the sunset was spectacular - and so far this morning it is all blue sky and sun and COLD breezes. Ahh, maybe I should say “wind” since I had to shut the windows.......
Linkmeister, it is no secret that my dream (goal!!) is to live on Oahu for at least part of the year (in a couple of years) - my partner in crime loves it as much as I do, but since it is his pension and retirement funds that will be necessary to live on, he is somewhat less enthusiastic. So, of course, he has delighted in pointing out the weather this year to me. I have turned a deaf ear to him though cause I figure it has to be better than snow and ice!! I am determined!!
And my word is SPRING!! I guess this is spring!
Well, cyn, so far this has been an aberrational spring. Normally we have the most boring weather in the world, and our TV weatherpeople struggle to justify their existence by adding new nifty graphics to their segments of the news.

Didn’t somebody say “meteorology is more art than science?” If not, I got dibs.
After a beautiful sunny morning it began to rain buckets, and it’s now gray, drizzly and gloomy.
