Intrigue
I go away for a few hours and the next time I check the news, all hell has broken loose. Porter Goss resigning as CIA Director is a surprise. Sort of. It was just last week that he was implicated in the brewing Hookergate scandal. If that’s blowing up, that could account for a sudden resignation. But of course, my suspicious mind wonders. If you wanted to get rid of a guy who was getting in the way and who was resolutely sticking around, the threat of a little sex scandalage might convince him to quit. Anyway, the story CNN is carrying says that Porter Goss was getting screwed over by John “Deathsquad” Negroponte, Director of National Intelligence (and former Iraq ambassador, 4/2004-2/2005) and having some of his agency removed from his control and placed under Negroponte’s control—with White House backing. As much as I don’t care for Porter Goss, I sure as heck don’t blame him for not wanting Negroponte to get both hands in the cookie jar. Real life is way more intriguing than a Tom Clancy novel. Unfortunately, it *is* real life and the outcome isn’t necessarily a happy ending.
