George is a liberal

Listening to a bunch of Republican planners and strategists talking on On Point, on Boston’s WBUR. They’ve really piled on George Bush, pretty much saying he’s poison for the 2006 mid-term elections, as things stand right now. They say that Republicans don’t win elections locally. They win on national issues. Unfortunately, that’s a rotten place for them to try to win this year because George Bush isn’t much of a Republican or a conservative and he’s hurting the party. Well, at least they’ll go that far.

They still, however, insist that Ronald Reagan’s tax cuts were the best and their benefits finally kicked in during Clinton’s second term. I just about snorted my coffee over that one. They still think that George’s huge tax cuts during an expensive war are pretty good policy. (What logic are they using for that??) It’s just that he’s spending too much everyplace else. And he’s dishonest. And the Republican Congress is corrupt, etc., etc. They still think George can turn it around and restore people’s trust in him if he stops acting like a liberal and starts acting like a conservative. But he only has about six weeks in which to do it.

Oh please. George is a liberal? Try extremist reactionary who lies like a rug. That’s a great meme. George Bush is a liberal. That’s a good one.

They don’t think Republicans will do very well in the 2006 elections though. It’s really the fault of Congress. Even while they’re piling on George Bush, they still won’t quite go the distance to openly admit that George is their main problem. Even if he is a liberal and lies, etc. They just don’t seem to know how George can turn things around. It’s hard when your titular king has fouled the nest.

At least they openly admit that the party is a mess. And they don’t seem to have any idea how to fix it. I enjoyed listening to their mounting panic.
