YaY for the lad!
As for the TV, watch the one thing you really want to and enjoy it immensly, and dump the rest.
Probably more people than not end up doing something completely different than what they studied. There are times when I look at the way the world is turning and think a good trade would be a smart move. Journalists are sort of a dime a dozen, but try to get a good electrician or a plumber or a carpenter these days. Their waiting lists are ridiculous and they will never go hungry. In any case, whatever the lad decides to do, I hope it’s something he really, really loves.
The good thing about TiVo is that the programs are saved until. It took me six months to watch the last two episodes of 24 from last season so I suppose I’ll keep them, watch the Sopranos and dump the rest.
I think one of the first things I’ll do when the lad leaves home is cut television offerings back to basic network stations. The rest is wasted on me. I wish we could have ala carte television, though. I don’t like DirecTV’s policy of not being able to purchase a premium station (HBO) if you only sign up for basic stations. In order to enjoy the premium stations you have to sign up for extended programming. It’s good policy for them, I suppose, but not for customers.
WhooHOOO--YAY for the lad (and you and his dad)!! Makes for a wonderful spring and summer for all!! I still remember my oldest when his “reach” school came through first with an EARLY acceptance. Joy oh joy!! And his safety school was a NO!! Strange at the time, but then we found out that lots of kids from this town (especially from “THE” prep school) used to apply to the same school as their safety and never went so the school stopped accepting so many of them. That is fair!
And then there is the younger son--he started out on the West Coast at Evergreen (don’t ask, just different strokes and all that), then went to Arizona, then Northeastern and finally ended up at UMA/Amherst. It’s been ever such a long road!! And he is talking about going back, but now it is on his nickel, not ours thank goodness!!
Speaking of reading--have you read The Second Bill of Rights: FDR’s Unfinished Revolution and Why We Need it More Than Ever?? Bought it the other day for my husband and he is loving it, constantly stops to hand it to me and say, read this line, read this paragraph!!
Also, if you have the time, read “The World is Flat” He was so impressed with that one, he had me BUY several so he could give them to other people!!
Holy Moly--look at the typos in my last post.........can you correct them? I don;t want anyone to see them. Am in a hurry and it showed!! Yikes!
Hey Cyn. I wasn’t around most of the morning so I was a bit delayed in fixing things. Done now.
Yes, spring and summer look much more relaxed. At least in the waiting and wondering department. The lad and Dad are going out to see Ohio Wesleyan again this weekend and then I think they’re going to swing east to catch a look at LaFayette.
Both the Dad and I have misgivings about Emerson. We’re not convinced that’s a good fit and even the lad is beginning to have some second thoughts. Looks as if Hobart is taking the lead. Which we definitely think is a good fit. But then there is that OWU scholarship that really appeals to the parents. We’ll see.
Soon, I suppose it will be time to start weeding through his possessions to get stuff ready to go. Of course much of that depends on where he goes and how much space he’ll have. But that’s the upcoming summer project.
It is an interesting mental process. I already see signs of the lad putting mental distance between himself and home. It’s been so gradual that it’s been a good deal less traumatic than I would have expected (for me). He’s getting really excited about going off to college and I keep telling him he’s going to be so much happier in college than high school. The changes in him this past year have been quite striking. He really has grown up and he’s ready to try his wings.

Re: college majors
I started out (in fact, I went to Arizona partly because of) Anthropology. A couple of semesters later I switched to Psychology. I was briefly in Russian Lit till I dropped out that semester and joined the Navy. 6 years later I got to Hawai’i and found a small private college and finished up in Bus. Admin.
Then I got hired after graduation to run the computers for a private social/health club because the guy who hired me wanted someone who wouldn’t be nervous running electronic equipment.
