This and that

The poor lad has succumbed to the creeping crud that’s sweeping the area. Much porcelain hugging going on and I’m staying way, way, way far away from that whole scene. I am glad that he is old enough to handle the details himself because, if not, I’d be hurling over his shoulder right along with him. I’ll supply the water and the ginger ale and the toast or crackers and Pepto-bismal. But the rest is out of my jurisdiction. I hope he feels better soon. He’s so miserable.

Sometime today, I have to head for the wood stove store to pick up a roll of the braided gasket that fits around my stove’s door to keep it airtight. Mine has worn out and a sizable chunk dropped off last night. It’s not a big deal to replace, just involves lots of sticky cement which will probably end up in my hair, on my face, on my sleeves. That’s my guess. Usually happens that way. Even with the best of intentions and planning, I still end up with cement all over me. The stove should be back in business by tonight, anyway.

Now if my wood will just hold out. The forecast for February is VERY COLD as the jet stream shifts and Canadian blasts come pouring down. That’s what our weather person said, but we’ll see. I’d be just as happy to keep the moderate temperatures we’ve had so far.

I’m still thinking about the Prez’s speech last night and wondering why he didn’t mention anything about conserving energy if he is concerned about reducing our oil consumption by 2025 (assuming there is still oil and consumption hasn’t already been reduced by running out of it). I suppose it’s a huge concession for him to even talk about reducing our dependency on oil, but I just don’t think new resources are going to do the job alone. I wonder how serious he is when his suggested dollar amounts to fund research and development are so low. Guess we’ll see what the next few years bring. One way or another, we’ll learn to live with a lot less oil. Just be nice if it was as painless as possible.

Hi Kate,

Always enjoy your woodstove adventures and this one had me LOL. I know what you mean about getting adhesives in unintended places. It’s like I’m a magnet for the stuff.

Bought a pellet stove at the local Lowe’s this evening (50% off) even after being warned that pellets are currently unavailable. That’s what a $524 natural gas bill for January will drive you to. I’ve used woodstoves before and thought I would give this type a shot. Just hoping the fuel reappears in time for next heating season.

Did you see our (I live in Virginia) Governor give the Democratic rebuttal to the State of The Union Performance? I am impressed. Not quite Jack Kennedy but I thought it was the best response I can recall.

Hope your son is feeling better.

Hi Don. I can see how a $524 gas bill would get your attention. Holy smokes. That’s steep!

I read someplace yesterday that there are a couple of pellet manufacturers who just started using switch grass to make pellets, in addition to the compressed sawdust pellets. I would be surprised if the pellet supply didn’t improve over last year. Where there’s a market, they’ll find a way. Just buy early in the season when the last thought on anyone’s mind is heat. Enjoy!!

I didn’t hear the Gov’s speech, though read a little about people’s impressions. Some liked him, some didn’t. Most of the news was filtered through a conservative lens and I don’t think many conservatives would have liked anything a Democrat said. News coverage wasn’t exactly unbiased. I’ll have to check out what he really said. It’s nice to know someone liked him. smile

Sticky cement report: None in my hair. Lots on my hands, a smear on my cheek, some on the hearth bricks, and a big glob on my pretty fuzzy pink socks. The stuff on my hands, cheek, and the bricks came out. I have a permanent black blob on my formerly pretty fuzzy pink socks. Oh well. Next time.
